Hi!

I have been a member for a little while now but this is my first thread so I thought I would introduce myself! I have been riding for about twenty years but am certainly no pro... I just like being with horses and generally hooning around the countryside. I don't have my own horse at the moment but I share a mare and look after my retired riding instructors two ponies. Which brings me to the topic of my thread....

Meet Secret, she is a 17 year old, 12.2 Welsh B (attitude to boot) typical welsh, a lot of fun, and pretty darn cheeky. I would like to know more about her colour, I know she is dun but would love to know what sort?

I have a photobucket account but have never posted a picture before so apologies if my numpty brain has not managed it!

Thanks for reading :)

Hi,

I would actually say that she is probably a palomino, perhaps sooty variety, silver hairs in mane are permissable for sooties.
If she has a dun parent then she may be a dunalino.

Do you know her breeding? Does she have a dorsal stripe and leg barring? If so, then she will be a dunalino.

No dorsal strip or leg barring... Dark legs, dark dappling, goes lighter in the winter. Tail used to be darker but has got lighter with age.

Faracat...... where are you? Beautiful Barbie Pony!

Oh she will be along at some point.....she can't keep away from pwetty ponies!

I'm here... loving the pretty pony! :D You all know me so well. :) :) :)

Pretty pony is a Welsh B so no Dun gene in that breed, which makes everything nice and simple... palomino. Enfys (the pally expert :D ) is probably right that she is a sooty palomino.

Ah! Brilliant! Thank you :-) had no idea there wasn't a dun gene in the welsh b line. See you learn something new every day - thanks team!

Pretty pony is a Welsh B so no Dun gene in that breed, :)I was wondering about that, just waiting for someone - you - where's Karen? - to come along and say that for sure which makes everything nice and simple... palomino. Enfys (the pally expert :D ) Kind of you, but not quite true :)is probably right that she is a sooty palomino.

:):):)

So now I have your expert attention :-)... Please can you tell me the difference between dun and buckskin? Can you always tell by eye? What specifics do you look for? Thank you in advance

Buckskin is caused by the cream gene which also cases palomino and smoky black (depending on the base colour that it is diluting). If the horse has two copies of cream, the base colour is diluted even further to creamello, pearlino or smokey cream (again depending on the base colour).

Dun can also act on different base colours so you get red dun (chestnut base), blue dun (black base) and yellow dun (black + agouti = bay, so bay dun, this is the one that looks similar to buckskin).

Duns have dorsal stripes and often leg barring, but buckskins can be countershaded and have dorsal stripes.

It is a striking colour. :) Highland ponies come in dun. ;)

There was a member on here that had a pale chestnut, I was so pleased to tell her that she actually had a very special (you don't see many in the UK) red dun.
