In 24 years of doing referral work I have never had so many Laminitic ponies/horses referred to me.
The grass is still growing due to the land temperature still being very high for the time of year.
This means that some grasses still think it is worth trying to produce another seed thus pushing up the sugar content.
Just thought I would put out a plea to owners to think of it more as spring rather than winter at the moment.

I can echo this - speaking to my farrier as i have a ex Laminitic. Seems to be rife at the moment, mine is muzzled, exercised regularly and on a good diet.

Sadly people think that Spring is the only dangerous time - when in fact Autumn/Winter is just as bad!

where in the sw are you? i want to go barefoot with my cushings laminitis pony..the grass is really good where i am.. lots of laminitis about...

I hope that your vet and the barefoot trimmer are in agreement, it is always better for the animal if the team is working together.
Otherwise the owner is left with the dilema of who is right

not meet the barefoot trimmer yet, hes still in shoes.. she thinks he should be out but not on grass and not stabled.. vet said out....??bft is coming next week...i dont think he should be out...

I am of the school that believes a laminitic should be encouraged to move as much as it wants, it seems that heel growth, and DFT retraction is more likely in a stabled horse than one that is moving.
This will not show itself until the horse is better and tries to use full extension and heel placement once the healthy laminae have got the correct amount of attachment.

not out on good grass anyway, but i aggree he should be out rather than in.. this bft coming next week worked with jamie jackson, so i assume she is good? vets telling me to soak haylage someone else telling me not to...?
