Please dont wait till later on, keeping any horse alone is not acceptable, but to keep a youngster alone is beyond cruel.
That very much depends on each circumstances TBH and it's very unfair to class someone that can only have one horse at a time as cruel when in fact they might be the best owner in the world that horse could have. I've known several horses over my sixty plus years of working with them that actually hated another horse in the field with them and would do everything to oust them out.
Ellie is lucky that she has a horse in the neighbouring field plus our cattle to talk to which is why I'm not in a rush to find a companion. It has to be the right one for all of us and that will take time.

So sorry for the loss of your mare. Hope your doing ok.
Thank you. It was my livery who had been here nearly six years so she felt like mine too and the owner had had her for sixteen years; she had been a WHP winner at HOYS back in her day.
Baggins was the same didnt want to go near Dex once he had been pts, i got him close enough he could understand he was gone, he was then on his own for 2 weeks, he was definitely grieving but as soon as I managed to get a companion he was over the moon. If there is a horse over the fence that gives u breathing space to find the right companion (s)

I'm sure someone would jump at the chance of retiring their horse at yours!!
Strange aren't they; all different. Yes, Lippy is next door so I have some breathing space which is good. Thank you x

A neighbour isn't enough for a two year old to learn social skills and the ages of 1-3 are the most influential for horses to learn how to behave around others. A two year old kept on its own becomes a horse who can't turn out with others when it's older. I'm sorry for your loss and I hope you find a suitable companion soon.

I’m so sorry for your loss, but sounds like the old horse had an amazing life and a very peaceful end, which is something to be proud and happy about.

As for the young one, I still think it would be better to sell. She needs the chance to become a good citizen and have a useful ridden life in time, and it sounds like you are ready for a little rest! Then have a rethink when the weather is better about what comes next…maybe rescue a couple of older retirees? That would be so rewarding..
