So the bloods are back and it shows he is tying up very badly....so total change of regime....small paddock no walking out, total rest, no hard feed at all and Vitamin A!......

So thank you for all the responses on the flaying skin yesterday and today's starter for ten is who has experience of Tying Up.

This horse will be the bloody death of me!

Thank you!

O blimey - if its not one thing its another!! I have nothing to offer on this but just wanted to send you both a hug!!

Hope things start to look up now that you know what you are dealing with.

I was interested in the vitamin A - I thought vitamin E and selenium was supplemented for tying up - but it is a long time since I was told that!

(((Hugs)))

Really hoping that things start to get better now!

My mare is finally back in work and about to start competing again after tying up badly at the end of March.

Equine America do tye-gard which is a supplement with Vit E and selenium in it, you feed it daily when they are recuperating from an attack and to help prevent another. Also look at feed, feed only according to work done (or as I do, don't give your horse a proper day off) and avoid high starch feeds, go for high protein/oil instead. I've been recommended ERS pellets. It's important to warm up and cool down properly when exercising.

Make sure that you repeat the bloods and don't start ridden work again until they are back to normal, otherwise you risk a relapse. Any questions, feel free to pm me.

Mysterygirl thanks for the hopeful prognosis!

Poor lad has tied up due being cast on Sunday he was down and hung up by one leg for (we think) 4 hours plus. So as you can imagine when he was lame we and the emergency vet thought hey ho.......he's strained his leg.....I noticed on Sunday that his pee was slightly red and our regular holistic vet came and took bloods....He is now on the Vitamin E (not Aei!!!) with Selenium suppliment, no hard feed and turnout in a small paddock.

Fingers crossed I am at least happy to know what is causing the lameness as the emergency vet was muttering about if still lame this week do X-Rays to check for Bone Fissures...arrrgh!

I am sincerely hoping that as this is an attack due to trauma that this will not happen again or is it a case of once it happens to them they are predisposed to it?

Anyhow thanks folks that is why I like to ask questions on here there is always someone who say yep been thre done that don't worry.

The positive thing is he is only just 4 so if it takes six months to get him back to ridden work (can't see a saddle going on him any times soon!!!) then hey no matter let him have some maturing time.

Going over today and will take lots of pics of the flayed skin one who is now going under the name of Frakenhorse!
