I should get her to ride my horse he sees a whip never mind smack him with it and he pings about like a looney, if she hit him he would probably launch her into oblivion! And even with no smacking he still does very well, so in agreeance with everyone else total idiot!
Ah, this has so been exaggerated now - she didn't really lay into it. It was a split second decision she made. The horse jumped the rest fine didn't it? Don't think it's scarred for life!
I have to agree that I don't think what she did was even close to behaviour that should lead to a BSJA ban. Fine, she didn't present the horse very well, but considering that she has ridden really well all week, at her first time at Olympia i think we can forgive her this. We all know that professional riders at this top level do things in training at home (and away) that are not always preferable to the publics eye.
I do think she then over-rode the course, at too much pace for what the horse needed after a heavy week and maybe she would have done it more favours by retiring after another jump.
Lovely little horse though - got a lot of spark to it, i'm sure with a bit more experience under it's belt it'll be more competitive in these classes!
She will no doubt learn that she can't behave in that way at such a high profile public show. And I'm sure she will probably realise. I remember Laura from years ago and she was a nice young woman back then, and I'm sure she hasn't changed. However much I like someone I can't help but want to rip the whip out of their hand and give them a good bashing with it though!
There have been worse displays.
It is a shame we are discussing this instead of Geof Lucketts fantastic win.
you have to realise that LR is PROFESSIONAL....she rides for a living, therefore, like it or not, guys, her horses are tools in her business..
they are trained as such, and therefore should perform as such.
if they don't, they get a smack..or two.
they are NOT pets..as the majority of the animals belonging to most on here....
GET A GRIP.........she has done NOTHING wrong.

Thank god I am a novice then if being a professional means you ride like an idiot, turn your horse far too sharply into a jump they have absolutely no chance of making and then wallop the hell out of the horse for it.
She has done LOTS wrong. Horses are living, being, sentient creatures, not bloody machines.
That's a shame as LR is a particular favourite rider of mine and she has had the most impressive form over recent years producing her own string of youngster's from scratch (including Beluga if that's who the horse was).
I didn't see it, and I agree with that sort of correction not being appropriate for a big family show BUT these are pro rider's who know their horse's inside out. How the heck does anyone on here know what the best form of discipine is for that horse, or indeed what the event's were leading up to the horse 'stopping' yesterday and today. For all you know the horse may have been taking the mickey for some time and needed a quick sharp reminder.
Just because she did this today it does not mean she abuse's her horses outside the ring and it is unlikely she would be having so much success with her young horses if she treat's them badly.
She always rides her horses moving forward, it's her style, and it was a speed class FFS !!
Finally, with regard to it being 'her fault', if anyone on this forum can produce and ride horses half as well as she can then they may be qualified to comment on her riding . . . but I very much doubt it !!!
Rant over.
WD would normally agree with your sentiments but as you didn't see it you wouldn't have seen just how badly she misjudged the turn. And then hit her horse for it when it was her error.
I felt sorry for the horse who looked overfaced, anxious and completely over the edge.
There were a lot of riders who demonstrated excellent horsemanship and called it a day when it was obvious that a. they had no chance of winning so it wasn't worth racing their horses around for nothing and b. when the horse started to get overcooked they decided to end on a calm note. Those are the kind of riders I could watch day in day out, and who IMHO really can and do produce top quality horses.
I do agree she was a bit excessive but its been a long week for both horse and rider, so by stopping the horse probably caught her off guard.Although i agree it was a poor setup earlier in the week he may have made more of an atempt to jump it so she may have been expecting the same amount of effort she gets at the beginning of the week as at the end, hence being annoyed with him. I mean we're only human everyone makes mistakes.
I didn't see it but no horse deserves or needs smacking that much. I also very much doubt that the BSJA will do anything about it. I was at a show and witnessed another top international rider smack his horse several times and then hit it around its head. No one said a word to him!
In my opinion yes they may be better riders but they are not above anyone else in how they behave.
I saw this incident and was shocked at the thrashing the horse got, I do understand that as a pro she's got a lot riding on her ability to win, and in the heat of the moment anyone can loose their temper, however I do think that the judge should have rung the bell and stopped her for unsportsmanlike conduct. There are several other sports out there where pros can be warned/disqualified for bringing the sport into disrepute for their behaviour in public.
I agree that it wasn't the best publiciity for the sport, but I don't think it deserves this sort of response. It was heat of the moment, and I am sure she will have realised afterwards that the horse didn't really have a chance of jumping the fence. She gave it 3 short sharp cracks - the horse has a muscly enough arse that it will have stung for a few secs and then it would have forgotten about it I'm sure. I always carry a stick on Murph, and on the odd occasion he has stopped out of naughtiness he will get smacked across the arse - if he gets away with something once, he will continue doing it (hence I now have a horse who refuses to go in the stable because he was allowed to get away with it on working livery!) I don't carry a whip on my other SJer simply because if she were to stop I know it would be my fault, so there is nothing to reprimand her for.
I do think she could have ridden the rest of the round a bit more sensibly as she couldn't win after the stop, but I know I have been guilty of going a bit fast when I didn't need to, and perhaps she wanted to give the horse a taste of a speed class since she's paid to enter it.

ok so maybe the THREE smacks werent deserved but personally to me that looked a dirty stop, so maybe a smack or two would have done and I know Im probably going to get mobbed by a few people on here for this but I would rather see her smack her horse than grind spurs in the horses sides (which I have seen on a fair few occasions at olympia and hickstead!!!) or heave the horse in the mouth.
I know it has upset a lot of you but honestly theres far worse "cruelty" going on..........
