Could someone tell me the law on towing? I'm almost 23, held a licence since I was 17 and am insured to drive my mums jeep but unsure if I can tow or if I have to do a separate test? I have an Ifor Williams 510 & would be towing 2 tbs. My mum always tows but would like to share the drive sometimes. Thanks in advance..

I think you can tow the trailer, but without the horses in it, if the trailer is not more than 750kg, and the combined weight of the jeep+trailer is not more than 3.5 tonnes. x

An Ifor Williams weighs more than 750kg nearer 950kgs off the top of my head

OP, sorry, you need to do the test.

wouldnt matter if the trailer weighed less that the 750kg empty if its weighted for over your licence grade you can be prosocuted & they will not allow you to move untill someone leagally able to tow it can be with you.

test will be needed im afraid.

more on this one, my 23 yr old daughter will need to do her trailer test but can she drive the car and trailer with me with her for experience. I seem to remember reading somewhere that this is possible but you need to put L plates on both the vehicle and the trailer. Anyone know any more about this or did I dream it? ;)

although OP, if you're mum is going to be with you, if you put L plates on, you can tow legally. At the moment as long as the person sitting next to you has their B+E, they can supervise (I wouldn't hold my breath it will be for much longer, they have revoked garndfather rights for 7.5tonnes)

Thankyou , that has answered my question too!!!!

You can also have a person who is pre 1997 with B&E privledges.

I have an email from DVLA Stating the exact law, its not in jargon, its pure & simple.

I have kept it incase im ever pulled over. Lets face it, if you were I highly doubt that they'd know the law anyway...

If anyone wants this email, im happy to send on.

By B+E priveledges I believe you mean the driver has B+E provisional and can tow trailers on a B licence under certain rules??

This site covers all those sorts of issues in the link in my signature :)

Of course you can share the driving with your Mum in the passenger seat as you will have B+E provisional on your licence and she will have held a full B+E licence for more than 3 years and be over age 21 - tell her by not much over though ;)

You must have L plates fitted and the insurance must cover you as a B+E learner so give the insurer a call to check that

they will not revoke B+E supervision rights because B+E is not a vocational licence category

This was revoked in 2010...

April 2010 to be pedantic
Those supervising any LGV or PCV categories must now have passed the relevant DSA test or tests

B+E was not nor ever will be included as B and B+E are not vocational licences
Vocational licences are subject to more stringent rules and laws

really? That is great news!! Still must get off my arse and take my test though.... It's a right pain having to get someone to sit with you all the time!
