tbh dont actually understand the need for them when we are more than qualified (and a lot more qualified than they are) to do the job.

I don't agree, as I said before, a good BF trimmer will have done as much training as a 'normal' farrier excluding the shoeing part.
A good BF trimmer will be fully insured the same as a good farrier.
A good BF trimmer doesn't do a pasture trim so is not doing what a 'normal' farrier does and 'normal' farriers are not trained to perform this type of footwork unless they have taken themselves on a training course.
There are good and bad in all spheres of life, some farriers slag off BF trimmers and some BF trimmers slag off Farriers - IMO it is only the bad Farriers and bad BF trimmers who resort to these tactics as they are clearly worried that people will realise how crap their work is!
If you really don't understand the differences between a pasture trim and a BF trim might I suggest you going on a weekend taster course or something? Thats what my farrier is doing as he is quite fascinated by it all....
I'm not trying to say you need to or anything simply that its very interesting and would probably answer your questions far better than anyone on here can.....
I think everyone agrees that there needs to be some sort of governing body for BF trimmers.
There is a need for BF trimmers and there is a need for Farriers, hopefully one day they will all be able to work happily alongside each other.....
