As in, being led, rather than ridden or dropped off.

My livery yard is just down the road from a small town. It'd be a great place to take a horse around in order to get it used to dogs, children, noise, etc. Just wondering, basically, if there are any laws regarding where you can take a horse in/around a town?

Don't think so, unless there are local bylaws. Not long ago horses were used as normal transport and would deliver goods. However, the volume of traffic has increased somewhat.

I suppose it would depend on whether it is regarded as "safe." If other road users would not expect a horse at all and you would be creating a hazard.

I took my youngster round a local housing estate when he was at the baby stage. He kept gawing at the gardens and wanted to go up the drive to see what was happening. Be sensible I think is the answer. Don't go in the rush hour, find a quiet time of day.

Not that I've ever come across, and someone at the yard was saying the other day that they saw someone riding round one of the parts of Sheffield that has a tramline.

I think as long as you don't cause havoc (massive queues as cars try to get past you) or your horse freaks out, then no one will mind. You'll probably get some funny looks but hey ho!

As far as I'm aware, it's only motorways riders aren't allowed on (don't think I've forgotten any other road types we legally can't use)
