Hi, just wondering what sort of laws there are with regard to riding other peoples horses and getting paid for it. I have rider insurance which covers me for riding any horse and im 15yo. It may turn out to be a stupid idea, but just wondered on opioions really. Loads of people have said I can school their horses for them, and I thought it might be a good way of making some extra pocket money type thing.
Thanks, opinions are appreciated!! x

I know you can get insurance to ride any horse, but you may want to check that it still valid if you are being paid for it. May be worth ringing the company and asking beforehand.

It probably depends on the horses you are riding. All mine are insured so anyone can ride them with my permission. and that is a pretty standard horse policy. Also all horses must be covered third party so if they damage anyone else's property it is covered. You need personal accident insurance so if you get injured riding. handling then you are covered.

I think my insurance covers others riders for personal accidents, as long as they have my permission to ride my horse. I think it does change if money is involved (ie you getting paid) not sure though.

you need personal accident insurance, and also public liabilty insurance as the horse owners insurance wont cover you if you have an accident as you are receiving money.
you also need to consider declaring it as income to the Inland Revenue, if you don't and they find out you've been pocketing money they'll come down on you like a ton of bricks and are likely to delve into the rest of your family then as well.

i used to run a business training horses and my dad's business was falsly (sp?) investigated, they then went through all of my paperwork, my mum's, brothers and even my aunty's - bl**dy people.

And finally you need to weigh out how much you'll actually be making once you've paid all that insurance (not many companies will insure riders for anything less than a small fortune) and things like National Insuarance Contributions (compulsory for the self-employed) and tax at the end of each year also.

good luck if you decide to go for it - pm me if you want to know anything more.
