Layering rugs for turnout.......

I think I am going to buy a rug to layer for turnout - I have only ever layered using fleeces etc which cause rubbing, hence why I have been against layering until now.
I am looking for a stable rug or under rug - this is to go under his turnouts and is for my TB who REALLY feels the cold and is underweight.

What weights do you use?
Do you use strictly satin/nylon lined rugs or do you use cotton lined rugs(thinking cotton lined will rub?)?
Do you use combo/full neck under rugs?
Can you recommend any rugs(they must have leg straps)?

My horse has a lightweight staple, then a normal weight with hood stable and then a normal weight turnout with hood. Works much better then one heavy rug.

mine dont rub as made of the shiney material (cant think of name) so they move easily over each other!
 
TBH Id just get a decent turnout in the first place. On my woosy horse I use the new Weatherbeeta Tristar which has the liner which can be easily washed etc. Its a fantastic rug, cant fault it at all. It comes with I think a 200g liner, so you can always buy the next one up making it into a 400g rug. My boy who is 1/2 TB (slim woosy type) lives out in his 24/7, including though the odd Scottish blizzard.

I wouldnt use seperate under-rugs since one of mine slid back last week and rubbed a huge gash in my horses neck... bringing with it a nasty puss pocket. It was horrific so I will never again use a rug under another which isnt designed for it.
 
Iv got a masta under rug which am using under her stable rug at the mo but will put it under her turn out when the time comes. It only has a buckle at the front but have detachable leg and belly straps which will put on.
Its not fun having one that feels the cold is it.Iv got a rug that rubs but just put an anti rub vest on her and that solves the problem also use this when layering just in case.

The liners for the rambo duos are great for layering I use my liners under my stable rugs and between fleeces when travelling, they have a strap at the front and clip to the back to the fillet string/ leg strap clips which are on most rugs mine haven't slipped yet. They also fit in the machine and come in lots of differnet weights, they're also nylon so shiney coat and no rubbing
 
I layer using a couple of T/O's never had a problem. Today as it is freezing here she has a HW and a LW on. I normally only layer 2 t/o's if its going to be chucking it down as other rugs tend to get wet, but I ain't ruining my new LW stable for anything! So out in the 2 T/O's it was.
 
My TB is out in 2 HW turnouts. Stables/turnouts always better as they don't stretch & slip back so much.
I prefer satin lined.
 
Cotton will rub. I use an amigo stable rug as an under rug, they sit nicely under turnouts and are nylon lined so hopefully won't rub (mine hasn't so far).
 
I always use turnout rugs on top of each other as I've seen too many horses with badly fitting under rugs and stablerugs that stick out the bottom and get soaking wet leaving the horse cold. I find turnout rugs are designed for running around so are tough, well fitted and breathable much better for the job!
 
My TB is out in a 450 g PE Winter Buster and he is seriously warm in it and never gets cold. Perhaps just get a really good turn out rug.

I hate layering because, as others have said, rugs pull back and end up hanging out the back, rub the mane and withers unless they are designed to be underrugs. My horse lives in his Winter Buster in and out and its perfect.
