Layering turnout rugs

Do you layer your turnout rugs?

Im hoping to have my boy chase clipped next week - which will then mean he comes out of his lightweight and should go into something around 250gm+

He has a medium weight rug but I'd like to put his full neck lighweight over the top to keep his neck clean.

Does layering rugs bug your horses at all? I know we can't ask them if it does but do you think its less comfortable than a heavyweight rug alone?
 
I layer Mellys rugs,I find it a good way of keeping her warm enough on our really exposed field without shelling out on more (heavyweight) rugs! I dont think it causes a problem as long as they are checked regularly.
 
Layering tends to keep them warmer IME but the bottom rug always pulls back on my horse. Maiden currently has a 40g FAL under a 100g Rambo Duo, but the FAL is rubbing her shoulders slightly. Shopping spree tomorrow to buy some Duo under rugs, I think!

If you make sure the bottom layer doesn't rub, and make sure you re-adjust both rugs at least once a day, I'm sure it'll be fine

I think layering all rugs, including turnout rugs, is the best way to keep horses warm. As long as your rugs fit and the horse/pony is checked regularly, it's a great idea. I used to put a lightweight on top of a medium weight on my TB.
 
I have a HW TO (320g fill) on my unclipped TB and at the moment he has a 100g jasper extra light stable rug underneath as its so cold - he really feels the cold.
 
Tonight Crop has on...... anti rub silky vest, a Weatherbeeta under rug combo, Ireland Hippo stable rug and a Weatherbeeta Orican HW turnout rug. It is blinking cold out there, she lives out 24/7 but does have access to a shelter. She is always layered in the coldest days as it keeps her warmer. She is checked twice a day and the bottom rug is undone and pulled forward if needed as well. I always keep the bottom rug on as it keeps her toasty. She has never sweated up and does not seem to be laden down or uncomforable in them

I like layering, keeps Ben nice and toasty. However, i put a small fleece stable rug underneath his T/O. All my T/O rugs are full necked so I am usually okay.
 
I've found layering with another turnout rug works really well as my fleeces and stable rugs used to get really wet!

Bridie isnt being turned out still, maybe in march (she is in rehab!) and hopefully it will be boiling! im hoping for a heat wave!
