I did some winter (indoor obstacles) trec last week end.
It was my first time, really enjoyed it and will def. do some more

I was a marshal at the first Trec ever held in Wales and at their next event I was an obstacle judge. There are 3 phases: the orienteering, control of paces and then the obstacles. Orienteering: the organisers agree a route and mark it on a big OS map. Competitors are given small maps of their own and 10 mins (or something) to copy the route onto their own maps. Then you set off either singly or in pairs or teams and you follow the route. There are checkpoints with marshals at strategic points along the route and the marshals mark your card with the time you arrive and leave. I think you have to wait a minimum of 5 mins and if there are a lot of riders arrive all at the same time, they have to leave with 3 min gaps between them. Something like that. If you miss out a checkpoint or do checkpoints at too fast or slow a pace, there are penalties. The control of paces phase is where you ride your horse down a 100 metre (or something like that) marked course. You go one way in the fastest walk you can manage WITHOUT your horse breaking into trot or canter. Then you come back along the same route at the slowest canter you can get without your horse dropping back into trot. Great fun! The final phase is a set of obstacles like step ups, a small log jump, ducking under branches, backing up in a straight line down a corridor of poles, opening a gate and going through it without letting go of it, going over a narrow wooden bridge, dismounting and walking your horse up/down a steep path, dismounting and leaving your horse inside a small circle - you back away a few feet and he must stand there calmly until you return. If he follows you (or buggers off lol) there are penalties. You can decide whether or not to try every obstacle, obviously you get no points if you miss an obstacle out. It's designed to find a great hacking horse that can cope with anything he might meet out on a hack. Clearly the organisers don't go on the sort of hacks that I do or they'd have loose goats, irate tractor drivers, scramble bikes, barking dogs etc etc etc as obstacles lol x
