When i go out with a older horse and we're cantering my 6 year old will hardly be the leader he likes to be behined them , I have to put In a lot of effort to keep him going foward In front but will quite happily canter with little effort when a older horse is in front. When I go out with others like my daughters pony that is older but not as confident or others that may be his age and not as confident he'll be the leader no probs. Any advice to work on this?

Canter side by side with the horse.

The pony is smaller, and shorter striding so I’d expect your horse to be in front of it.

Is it just the one older horse he doesn't like leading?

Are they turned out together? Is there some herd dynamics at play if he will happily lead the ponies/others?
If he is young and a bit lacking in confidence, and the other horse is sending subtle I'm boss back off vibes, it might be enough to make him not want to lead.

These older horses are ones that are not in his herd. We have met one once on a hunt last year and was a field masters horse and we bumped into them on a ride out yesterday and I just couldnt get him to lead without maximium effort, he just wanted to brake and be behined this horse. My friend also has a older horse that he knows well and yet again will not lead. My daughters one that they do live together lacks confidents but my one will quite happily be the lead horse, Its just like some kind of elder respect possibly? But would like to work out if theres is anything I can do with this as sometimes I would like to take lead.
