Neither, I use the DeMeulekamp. I've used them for several years now & have been really pleased with them, they let my SI horse live out happily, wash & wear well & aren't hard to get on once you get the hang of them. I put cream on sheath, face & legs & if the midges or flies are really bad I spray the rug but that's more for his peace of mind - I've never had him bitten through it but if they're buzzing around him he'll run himself into the ground.

I get mine from Solva Icelandics - excellent service even when I sent one back as it shrank, they sent the replacement before I had returned the original & couldn't have been nicer!

Slight flaw i the poll me thinks - you now can't tell which rug is protecting better as the second question isn't specific to the first (if you get what I am burbling on about).

Can you add another poll, as I would like to see if people think boett is better than snuggy, as have itchy pone to sort out!

I prefer the boett. The snuggyhood made my cobbie swelter.
Both cover the same sort of area but IMO the Boett is cooler and dries quicker should it rain.
Both need to be used with electric fencing ideally. A summer sheet/cooler on top could help to prolong its life .

The Boett lookalikes do look good although I've never tried them. I did hear one of the ebay take offs had some rubber/plastic on the seams which caused burns on one horse but that could be gossip

I've got a couple of Rambo Sweet Itch hoodies for one of mine...but she hasn't got normal SI.
They fit her really well, and she doesn't mind the ear holes bit, they don't rub, and they're easily washed and dried.

I ordered the Pagony Eczema for my horse a couple of years ago, but when I put it on I could tell it was going to chafe especially behind her elbows. I suppose you could say I didn't give it a chance as I know some people have been pleased with them (it looks quite good in that second photo but maybe it was just the shape of my horse), but anyway I sold it and just used a normal fly rug.

I've got a Rambo sweet itch hoodie for next summer. When does everyone start using them? I'm thinking maybe March??

I use a boett - very pleased, it is several years old now. A work colleague has also used boett for years. She replaced her ancient boett with the solva one, equaly good in her opinion but needed a bigger size as they came up a bit smaller. She tried a snuggy last summer but her mare managed to get it over her head and she freaked, running through fences and hurting herself quite badly - may have been a freak accident, but I wouldnt risk it myself

I'd like to answer you from my mare last year ...but my mare has a different (much more exclusive

) condition than SI.
The appearance of the midges where you are will depend on where you are in the country, weather etc.
Probably best to start rugging in March to be on the safe side, prevention being better than cure.

CotswoldSJ I see on your site that the Pagony now comes in an XXL horse size. Do you know just how generous a size these are? I've got an ID - big everywhere but has a truly massive front on him & very deep through his girth - & I'm wondering if it would fit him as a spare to his DeMeulenkamps since one is now wearing out so badly that I doubt it will manage a fourth summer. He takes a 7' in Premier Equine rugs (just fit him) or Masta CheckTechs if that helps.

If it probably would fit what's the order time (site says to order) & if there was a problem with the size would it still be possible to return it?

The cheaper rugs do not compare in quality and genreally do not last as long, the exception being the de mulekamp, which is the same material as the boet and similar quality.

I have tried them all and definatly find the snuggy hoods the best design, and certainly have no problems with the horse sweating in the summer.

I found the head pieces of the boet and like did not always stay in place and worked up exposing the top of my horses mane, which he rubbed off, also they are harder to put on, and if they go in the neck, which is where they usually do go, the whole rug has to be replaced.

The snuggy hood on the other hand has a separate hood, which is fixed round the horses belly, so fully protects the whole head at all times, also if the horse rubs the neck or leans over the fence and puts holes in it only the neck piece has to be replaced as the body is a separate rug.

So snuggy hoods wins, and I have tried and tested many, as I said in the previous post you do get what you pay for.

Have you actually tried the cheaper rugs or are you making a judgement based on price

The pagony is basically the same as a boett, but a thinner material. I think this is no bad thing, as I tried the snuggy and even in cream it was too thick and too hot for my boy. Plus I couldn't get a good fit on the head as it was either extremely tight on the face or baggy on the neck

Re pagony sizing, XXL is huge your horse would need to be a big 7ft3" to 7ft9"

My boy (the grey) wears the 195cm and he is normally in 6ft 9" shires and mark todd rugs.

Yes I have tried the cheaper rugs

I see your username is almost the same as the place that sells them.

That said though they are quality rugs, just not as robust do not last as long especially with a hoolagan gelding and so imo in the long run no cheaper.

Thanks for that CotswoldSJ, I'll have a think about it because it would make a much cheaper spare.

About three years ago a friend was raving about the Ultimate Sweet Itch rug that she'd got from you & suggested I try it on - it was the large size but it was way too tight on him everywhere & his bum was hanging rght out the end. He used to have 7' Shires rugs but outgrew them - they ended up too tight on the chest & shoulders, not big enough round the base of his neck & rather too snug on his bum - & Mark Todd are no good on him either. He's square, definately more substantial than your rather lovely grey looks to be.

CotwoldsSJ... was it you that I read some time ago that puts a summer sheet over your rugs to make them last longer?.. Is that because they are not as tough due to being thinner?..

I must admit, I followed your advise this summer and it did help while my lad had a normal fly rug on instead of his Boett...
