Hi - my 5 year old has just got her first pony and would like to do some lead rein classes this summer probably local level and perhaps county if we are feeling brave. I've been looking at the lead rein stuff from the likes of pretty ponies etc and they not only cost a small fortune ie about £500 to kit us both out for jackets/cullottes and my hat
Do you think I could get away with me in my green keepers tweed riding jacket with navy boden culottes and a navy baker boy hat? Or even a navy trilby from e-bay and a second hand tweed jacket for her. I don't want to let her or me down but I don't think lead rein is our main focus and I can't really aford to fork out the money just for 5-6 shows.

Could you maybe look in a charity shop for a hat? You can get some nice ones for a small price. I haven't ever seen anyone in a Baker Boy hat though. Pretty much anything goes though-I have seen lots of people without any hats showing in hand!

Ebay, buy a good quality 2nd hand one (horsemart also has some) and you should be able to get a fair whack of your money back when you are finished.

Second the vote for ebay or charity shop, also 'The Showring' website have good second hand stuff for sale. Also try 'horsegossip' for sale pages.
Your outfit depends on whether the pony is a plaited or an M & M. Tweed for M & Ms and navy for plaiteds is the general rule (unless doing SHP in which case tweeds for that too).

i wear a tweedy type jacket I got from M&S in the sale, and a skirt that I think also came from M&S. The hat I got from the Sock Shop or some such place. I wear a white shirt and a cream stock. This is very traditional rather than the verging towards show pony clothing that some people are wearing these days. Unless you are going down the HOYS or RIHS route, the above will beperfectly acceptable.

However, I am assuming you have an M&M. If you have a plaited show pony, then I am afraid that you wll probably need to spend abit more money.
The following two pics show the outfit that I use for doing M&M LR up to P(UK) level. The pally in the second pic is one that contests HOYS classes and the leader is wearing a "proper" outfit which looks rather smarter than mine!

sometimes I just wear my "in hand" outfit if it is a local show.

I used to show in a calf length flowery dress and straw boater. We laugh at those photos now!!
My daughter is now 17 and she calls it Mum's daggy days!lol

I love him too, so much like the one I stupidly sold last year. he won at HOYS too
