Hi,
Please can I have some advice.
We’re looking at two pony options for my two daughters 4&5, complete beginner riders. I am experienced horse owner.

We’re torn between two ponies
Both Welsh A pony’s. 11h there around.

One is 12 years old, more of kick along pony rather than a forward going pony from videos does seem more on the lazy side. But seems sweet.

Other one is 3 nearly 4. I know young! Backed & ridden by a child, lots of videos seen of a 3 year old running around the yard with it on a lead rein, seem very tolerant and chilled for such a young horse.

My main reason I’m considering the latter is because it’s not as much of a plod & part of me thinks my children can grow with this horse & is more likely to be better when they are riding competently.

Any advice please? There is £800 price difference with younger horse being cheaper. The thing I am noticing is a lot of older horses within our budget seem to have more issues & im wondering if we’re better having a clean slate with a younger pony.

(I have owned a 4 year old horse before but this is obviously for my children)

Thanks in advance

In my experience most 3-4yo are quiet then reach the Kevin stage and scare most kids and need an adult to sort them out, which at 11hh isn’t going to happen. Also, the kids will outgrow the pony in a few years so you’ll have longer to pay for a lawn mower.

Get the 12yo who is already proven to be calm and steady which is what kids need. Don’t forget they don’t have your experience.

The older one, the young one may be quiet now but that can change and your children’s safety and confidence should be the most important thing

Thanks everyone, I think I knew deep down that the older pony was the better option, I think I recall the teenager stage actually now you say it.
