Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum so please let me know if posting in wrong place. We have a Welsh sec a lead rein. My daughter is going to a local show next week and my friend has advised me to plait and trim him as a show hunter (which I have done....the trimming!) I am now panicking that I should have left him natural and I will be shot down in flames for trimming him.
Just looking for a little reassurance as if this is the case would just go for the jumping and wait to show next year when feathers are back!!
Thanks in advance for any advice!! 😊

I don't think you will be shot down in flames, if the judge asks what breed he is say you think he is part bred, if he is a registered sec a he really should be turned out as a native but it may be he is not true to type so is best presented as a hunter type so your friend may be correct to tell you to do this, there is no rule to stop you and at local level it really should not matter, go and let your daughter enjoy herself.

You may find he does well as a hunter type or you can grow the hair back for next season and show him as a native.

I've just trimmed my sec A up and don't regret it, he looks great as a SHP type, very smart

Do be honest if asked about his breeding, one pony was stripped of a title last year because he was described as a part bred when in fact he was full section A, this is unlikely to happen at local level but it makes it awkward if you reappear as an M&M at a later point, no point in courting controversy, there is enough in showing as it is!

Some of the most successful SHP are section A and they account for large numbers in LR SHP classes as well as the 122 class.
Thistledown Las Vegas is practically unbeaten this season and was last year too and is arguably one if not THE most successful small SHP ever. Yerbeston Darwin is another hugely successful pony - both full section A. At least four of the HOYS qualified LR SHP last year were full Welsh

It takes a brave person to see that their section A would be best suited to being a SHP, some do not do well at M&M classes but absolutely ace it as SHP

If they dont? well the hair will grow back!
