1st - I'm now a Sports Horse- whoop! :D

We have just agreed to loan another Welsh A and as well as local shows, PC etc I'd like to do some showing on the Lead rein.

So LR M&M is tidy natural with rider and leader in traditional dress / hacking jackets.

But for straight lead rein pony because of his breed can I not plait and do something like the navy and red style outfits? or even stay in our tweedy outfit as we have the same hacking jackets (different sizes ;o) ) so they match and look really stylish?

I personally prefer the plaited look and enjoy plaiting, but equally realise that in M&M classes what is required. And all the shows I've looked at there is enough of a gap to plait un plait and damp brush straight in between.

Advise please.... cheersmedears

M&M Lead Rein is all Au Naturel. No plaits, tweeds, plain browband and noseband etc. If the pony is pretty enough at local level you can plait up and do the show ponies as well - just thin the top of the tail slightly, not a complete pull just a tidy up, and feather is halfway down the hind cannon bone. You can then switch to navy and red for the show pony stuff. Hunter Pony classes are like M&M's in dress code but you plait them.

Most welshies these days have their manes pulled to about 5-7in long depending on the neck so you won't need to be plaiting with a full mane if you do decide to do the cross over.

I've just got home from doing a HOYS M&M Lead Rein class (pony wasn't on his bestest behaviour! Oops!) and I hate doing Lead Rein. It's so boring and trying not to swear in a ring full of kids really taxes my brain! Me no likey! Lol!

Good Luck!

Haha- i struggle with the swearing too! :o

Thats good after all the effort of getting there it's nice to enter as much as possible. Will only be local level anyway - looking forward to it!

Thank you for your help

There are three types of lead rein pony:

Mountain and moorland lead rein
Lead rein show pony
Lead rein pony of hunter type

You sound like you're sorted with your turnout for mountain and moorland. The key for the latter class will be in the title of it. I would definately plait for it, but if there is no seperate show pony and show hunter pony lead rein, you would probably get away with turning out in your m&m gear as a hunter pony. I suspect your pony would be more suited to this type anyway.

If it does specify show pony, then you really should do the navy look with sparkly browband, but at local level you won't be punished severly for turning up in tweed.

Have fun!
