We now have a new little rider for Ted and as a result we want to dabble in some leadrein showing, Perhaps 2 local shows and a breed show. Except there is a problem, the outfit! I would rather not spend a fortune for the sake of 2/3 shows so I was wondering if you would be able to help me.

First of all is my normal tweed jacket going to be ok?

2. Can I just get like a normal bog standard formal navy skirt to wear?

3. Where can I find a cheap hat?

Thanks

If the child is in tweed you could do beige cords- Al got hers off eBay for a fiver, so not dear. Then Just your riding hat with a navy silk would do over it... Think a shirt ad tie would be the mot correct though?

This come up on a BSPS website as someone who did well? But googling essentially says that if you look smart and unobtrusive anything goes...

Having seen the "scary mum" lead rein classes at the local county show, can you try and match the riders outfit to yours as much as you can? Or complementing each other at any rate?

I think if you are doing it very seriously, the handler/rider jackets match. I don't think you can go too wrong with your jacket, it looks like Keepers Tweed? Ebay is surely your friend in this, there are usually masses of children's tweed jackets on there, and if you buy a decent well known brand one, you probably won't lose money on it when you come to sell it again. Ideally brown jod boots for the little rider, I think it is your breed show you will need to look smartest for, although the NF pony breed show is remarkably relaxed atmosphere, not sure if the others are. I managed to win a minor championship at the NF Breed show wearing moleskin trousers and a fashion tweed jacket with elbow patches both from charity shops.

Personally I think culottes or a skirt look better than trousers for LR classes, but that is purely my opinion.

what level are you looking at? even the teeny tots ring at the local shows round here ('oop in the grim north) look scarily professional... navy skirt and hat (not a riding hat) would be best, and add a lead rein shirt rather than the standard one.

I wear a lead rein jacket for driving my section d that matches my grooms tweed on the back- the real difference between my lead rein jacket and my riding jacket is a slightly higher top button and velvet detailing to the cuffs and a velvet false belt at the back- all easily added by a seamstress. my lead rein jacket was £80 from ebay- but those with matching childs tweeds go for silly money :) good luck!

what type of pony is ted? tweed is correct if he's a native or show hunter, but if he'll be a plaited show pony, navy is correct for rider and leader... try here for info.
