How do you do it i use a bridle and lead rope through the bit bit it do's rub his chin as he's slower than the horse who's leading so I have to pull him upside could I use a chain as in hand with leather lead rope and a coupling chain on. all sugestions welcome.

I use a coupling which goes from 1 side of the bit to the other and the lead rein attaches to the middle, seems to work ok.

I use coupling with leather lead rope to ride and lead, always have done, if the horse being led keeps lagging behind I gently tap with schooling whip and they generally get the idea that they have to keep up after a couple of taps.

I use a dually headcollar, but then I'm not going on any roads and just on our self contained farm. I take a long dressage whip and will tap the top of the lead horse's bottom if they are not keeping up

The hardest thing is trying to sit straight when leading, as I am always aware that the temptation is to sit to one side.

I do it the PC way

, I unbuckle the reins and put the left rein under the chin and through the right bit ring, and then rebuckle.

If I don't have a coupling then use a lunge line going through the left bit ring, over the head to the right bit ring - like you would if you were lunging. So long as you can keep control of the lunge line - much handier than a leadrope as more to hang on to should you get in trouble.

Thanks guys will do a few of your sugestions I did think about doing the one like you peacelily over the head will have a go, many thanks.

We use reins. Have you thought about riding the more forward horse, and leading the other one? You may well find it much easier.

I use a bridle or a headcollar with my dog chain threaded under the jaw. I use an old draw rein as my lead rope - perfect as not too long but long enough if one stops for a pee and the other keeps walking.

If the horse is likely to be strong, I use the bridle with the chain through the bits and under the jaw.

Off road I have used just a headcollar with some of my horses, ie Cairo or Jemima as they used to just go along like a huge dog and never pulled or raced and to be honest, if they had, it would take more than a bit and chain to stop them as they were so big.

I have found that mine love to be led off another horse - Chancer did this from 2 years old and it taught me so much about hacking out before I got on him.

ooh no i find it so much easier to ride a slow one and lead the numpty- i HATE being pulled backwards by something slow. We do the polo ponies just in headcollars, but then thats round the track or farm, no roads or anything.

Make sure you use a good, sound lead rope; I was leading one time and the poxy clip came off the rope, leaving the led horse loose!! Luckily he was having a dozy session and hadn't noticed, so I carried out an emergency reattachment! I also used to ride and lead in the Chilterns where I had to go under half- fallen trees; on several ocasions I went under the tree with the ridden horse only for the led horse to put its head above the tree and pretend it couldnt fit underneath- tricky!!

i use a normal headcollar on all 4 when im leading- yes i lead 4 and ride! make sure the lead rope is a good one though! i often carry a whip as if they are being lazy i can give them a tap on the shoulder.
if horse is strong i do it the PC way as above

i use headcollars and try to get horses more or less matched for paces so im not dragged off backwards by a slowcoach. and when trotting if i want to walk i use my voice a la lunging

por toi im still trying to work up to getting four at a time out
