My horse is prone to breaking free and running off when leading him. He will start trotting, in a straight line and if you try to keep up, will canter, etc, until you have to let go off the lead rope. He's 17.2 and does it quite deliberately when he doesn't want to go somewhere or wants to eat grass, etc.. Its quite annoying, as you can't turn his head round and stop him, as he waits until we are both going in a straight line.

He does it far less often in a bridle but will still do so very occasionally, but its not always practical to lead him in a bridle, such as when I just take him out of the field to give him a feed. He usually doesn't do it when I twist the lead rope round his nose, but it falls off, or he rubs it off when I'm not looking, and its back to square 1.

Any suggestions?

When you loop the rein round his nose put it through the noseband of the headcollar so it can't fall off.

Go onto the Kelly marks website NOW and buy a dually headcollar. It will come with a DVD which tells you how to use it. Have a play in the school, or a small paddock. They work, they are not cruel. You can't have a 17.2 horse larking about like this.

In future you needs gloves, a hat and he needs to be on a lunge line, so he can't get away from you.
