So sorry for the personal nature of this post, but where else does one go but to you good people?! One for the older ladies:

Having had three kids, and reaching a certain age, and still trying to seek thrills, I find I’m sometimes in the embarrassing situation where I get a bit of leakage on landing from a jump! Or sometimes if horse shoots off unexpectedly. You get what I mean, I’m sure.

Also, when it’s the time of the month (and I’m a bit all over the shop with knowing when that might be at the moment) I feel I need some protection just incase I get caught out.

I still compete, and the beige breeches are particularly unforgiving - I’m all over the dark breeches for shows btw, great idea - I just don’t want that awful shameful feeling when you feel you might be showing something. Takes your mind off the job and really hard to check discretely, and what do you do about it anyway? Might be halfway through a round.

Are there any nice comfortable pants I could wear that would cover both scenarios. Maybe these new period pant things? Thank you.

I Modibodi are expensive but great! My daughter introduced me to the idea of period pants and all things cup like….

Modibodi are soft and very comfortable and have a range of styles/absorbency’s. I tend to use the heavy ones if at a clinic or competition - just in case as I am perimenopausal so never know what’s going on 🤣 I also found good old M&S period pants comfortable too. Never had a leak and actually felt more secure than in a pad. Although they are an investment, you will save so much money compared to buying pads. And you will find them more comfortable. I just rinse well then stick in the wash. Modibodi have some really good offers for buying multiples, so keep an eye on their website.

I have an incontinence problem that I usually use an Aldi pad for. They are extremely uncomfortable for me to ride with, so I swap to a very thin gel sanitary towel from Morrisons just for while I'm in the saddle. I don't like the period pants idea because I like to be able to throw the pad away and use a fresh one whenever necessary.

Hope that helps.

Apologies in advance.
Don’t read on if, well, you know.

I use Aldi type pads with ‘ 3 raindrops ‘ as after 2 kids, hysterectomy, multiple examinations etc for mild bladder cancer, my works are no longer as efficient as I would like. I couldn’t wear a larger pad, as @ycbm, as they are too uncomfortable.
My problem is that when carrying on riding the pads don’t hold the leakage or disintegrate because they are squashed.
Does anyone know of a pad that will hold bladder leakage without leaking itself when compressed.

I've used Tena when they are on free or half price offer and they are in a different league. They seem to have some sort of internal plumbing construction and much better wet containing edges. Worth a try?

Thank you. I always thought there wouldn’t be much difference. Will look for special offers and try them. I am fed up with removing and disposing of disintegrated pads.

I thought the same until I got some leaflets giving me a pack for free. It was eye opening how different they were, but they are £££ more expensive if you use several a day like I do.

ETA like many people with ADHD I've had incontinence issues all my life. Its now a recognised symptom.

I use the Cheeky Wipes period pants for that time of the month. They’re very affordable! I don’t like tampons and find pads uncomfortable to ride in, (especially the reusable ones I use), so the pants are a game changer!
(Edited to add, I can’t speak for them in terms of incontinence though)

Thank you guys, and yes, so great we can talk about it! I usually use pads but I find them quite uncomfortable and they give me chafe-idge (is that’s a word?!) Hence the request for some comfy knickers…

The beige breeches with a black or navy seat are a really good idea. I’ll have a look at those too.

But now I’m going to buy some period pants, how glamorous!

This is a useful thread. I am currently having a period that is basically haemorrhage. I get through a super plus tampax and night time pad in 30 minutes. Would period pants contain any leakage? As when I’m at work it’s difficult to get to the loo as soon as you absolutely must.

I have the high waisted Cheeky Wipes period pants for a bit of extra security overnight on the heaviest days of my period, and to ride in. They are really comfy and I prefer them to their lower waisted ones.

I don’t leak ( yet!) but I can get a wet sweaty bum patch. Yuck! I use a panty liner and think this might work for you too

Would they work as incontinence pants and keep you dry throughout a fun ride after an ‘ accident ‘ for example?

I used to do the marketing for always discreet (the incontinence pads and pants) which are part of the same family as the always pads and liners for menstruation. Did a lot of their internal training - basically they are made differently and although many people use the period versions for incontinence, the specialist versions work better. So I think it depends on which problem you’re more concerned over - an unexpected period or some urinary leakage.

I’m that age too and especially just after having my babies, definitely experienced issues riding (drop fences were true biggest problem!). Remembering to wee before riding and xc was vital. And these days my periods come sooner than I expect and last forever - thank you, perimenopause. I love period pants and think they may be your answer for a ‘catch all’ xx

Can I also say - thank you to everyone here being honest about their own situations. Things have come a long way from the embarrassment we once all felt whether over periods or incontinence. It helps all of us, to be more open.

I'm not sure, these are the ones I have https://www.cheekywipes.com/reusable-incontinence-products.html EDIT - sorry just realised this is the wrong link, it's these that I have: https://www.cheekywipes.com/high-waisted-period-pants/feeling-comfy-high-waisted-period-pants.html

And I see they have a heavy flow version of them under their incontinence section https://www.cheekywipes.com/reusable-incontinence-products.html which might be better than the ones I have.

Amen to this!

I wanted to extend this a bit and just throw out there, not necessarily just for OP but anyone who might not be aware, that pelvic floor specialist physios are a thing and may be worth looking in to. I'm not a physio, I don't know masses about it, and not claiming it will help everyone with incontinence but have heard that women don't necessarily have to accept that 'it's just the way it is' when you're a certain age and/or had children. I expect what's available via NHS is probably limited but hope it's one of those things that will get increased awareness and more people will be able to access information/support that can help them alongside improved products like the pads and pants. I so wish the pants had been a thing when I was at school!

The Stronger by Science podcast has an interesting episode on women's health and discusses pelvic floor issues

It's a while since I listened to this episode but I remember being impressed by what was discussed.

And Girls Gone Strong has some good free stuff
