Hi,

I have a young mare who is progressing well with her flat work but leans on the left hand, especially on the inside hand when I'm on the left rein in canter. She is quite unbalanced in canter so it's hard to school her on our rather unlevel field. However, I'd appreciate some exercises and ideas to prevent her leaning on the left hand.

I am quite interested in the biomechanics of the horse so if anybody could explain to me why this might be happening (eg which hind leg needs work) I'd be very grateful!

I'm also keen for some tips to correct myself as I've caught myself pulling back on the left rein as she leans on it which is a very bad but subconscious habit! Was thinking of getting a strap that clips onto the saddle to steady my hands? Might this help? Or core exercises to do on the ground (eg Pilates?) - open to ideas!!

So, overall, exercises for horse and rider please to promote evenness in both reins.

(Both horse and rider all checked - nothing untoward - new partnership and we are both relatively young!! We have an instructor who is a miracle-worker but I can't quite re-create this feeling at home.)

Sorry for the essay - well done if you finished that!!
