Has anyone experienced a horse leaning against wall purely from tight or damaged hamstring(s)? I understand this is a common behavior or result of PSD and will be getting a scan when our orthopedic vet can fit us.
My mare hadn't leaned like this until 2 accidents in quick succession. For the first, she managed to get her right hind inside her blanket's belly strap while rolling and was clearly sore through back and hamstring (on palpation and in reaction to having hind leg lifted for hoof picking/ farrier) for weeks afterward. On advice of vet and physio we put her on a light hand-walking program after body work but never scanned or x-rayed. During this period, she reared during a hand walk and tipped over as if something in her left hind had given way. In the days after, she was sound, but I did see her resting the left hind beneath her midline. Physio felt she might have gotten away with just a bit of damage to the fascia of her semi-membranous.
Aside from resting the left hind to take weight off the hamstring, I have seen her frequently pressing her rump into the wall, sometimes resting the hoof of either leg toe down. While I have witnessed both accidents and seen the above behavior follow, I'm having a hard time getting past the links to PSD.
This all happened about six weeks ago. I have brought her back to ridden work slowly. We've been on trot sets on a straight line for two weeks. I chanced a large circle yesterday and felt a strong resistance to bending or stepping under so I left it at that. She has been very reactive today to any kind of palpation of the hamstrings. I won't be doing any more ridden work until a full vet workup, but wonder if anyone else has experience with symptoms of hamstring strain or damage? Rump leaning that wasn't PSD? Thank you
