Learn how to repair rugs?

The problem with trying to repair rugs is you need either an industrial sewing machine, a domestic one just isn't powerful enough to sew through the rug & straps etc. Or you need a sharp awl & sharp leather stitching needles & strong thread....& of course some ability. The awl & needles will very soon go blunt though.

You can carry out some repairs i.e. rips by using a waterproof adhesive & & pieces of rug canvas so glue over the hole. This does work, I've done this myself. My wife was a bridle stitcher by trade & she has the ability to repair rugs but she doesn't like to because as I said it blunts all her tools very quickly. :(

I agree with this. I used to repair all of my own rugs as one of mine is a rug trasher. A normal sewing machine just isn't up to it. It was more hassle than it was worth, so I now send them away! If you really do want to learn, get in touch with your local rug wash/repair service or your local saddler may be able to help.
