Ouch! I was thinking about you just last week, So hope you make a speedy recovery and the pain dissipates soon.

Its so true that the least dramatic of falls hurt the most. I came off a few months ago, off to one side, landed in the nice rubbery arena, ended in A&E and couldn't walk for a week!
Roll on to 2 weeks ago, I got thrown into a metal gate ( no I wasn't intending to jump it :p ) ,with enough force I bent the gate! I landed on the other side of it. I walked away with just a bruise... go figure!
 
Good post Queenbee, being there in the moment with the horse, it's a valid reminder.

Now I will tell you another snippet:

I had been thinking for a while that I needed a schoolmaster, a hangover horse, just to ride and relax with. The day before the accident, I had gone with my trainer and tried out a horse she had found for me. I liked him and trusted him enough that I both cantered him in the school, and took him up the road a little way on my own. I brought him home for a 48 hour trial, left them a cheque, with the agreement if I didn't return him, they would cash the cheque. He kind of became mine by default, so my future depends on a horse I barely know! Horrible pic, but the best I have.

That horse looks lovely. If you had such a great feeling on him, there's no reason you won't feel the exact same way on him when you are ready to ride again :-)
 
Ouch ! Wishing you a speedy recovery ...although I feel you may have gone too far in your efforts to lose weight.... Saying that, both arms out of action must be considered a crash diet !

Seriously, good luck with the new horse, hopefully he will restore your confidence and allow you to have some fun without the pressures of bringing on a green horse.... He is lovely.
 
Ah BB I am so sorry you've been hurt. This post struck a chord with me as I'm in the same boat. Bought my dream boy but am overhorsed, we were doing OK but I fell off on saturday after surprising my lad by asking for canter in an unexpected place. Luckily I haven't been hurt, but it's forced me to conclude that he's not the horse for me; I took on a youngster that is too sensitive for my ability. It's sad, but I actually feel better having made the decision. Best wishes for your recovery. I hope I can find a handsome chap like your new boy, and that Ben finds his perfect match.

Not nice OP, hope you get better soon. It sucks when you get older, I can remember some big falls as a kid but I always bounced back up! One accident which I remember when I was 11 was being bolted with straight through a field and out onto a tarmac road, pony slid over and landed on me, we slid down the road. Not even a bruise after that! Since having a baby last year, my body has just shut down! My last 2 falls have resulted in me having a permanently numb hip (took about 3 weeks just to walk properly - caused by a pony I was backing taking off with me and launching me into a plastic jump block) and last time I simply slid off the side when a horse stopped at a jump and knocked myself out (first time ever) and ended up with a permanently messed up shoulder which clearly sits lower than my other one!

I just got escorted to the barn so I could spend some time with the horses, such good therapy, :)

Also got to see my helmet, yup, so glad I was wearing it, I'd hate my head to look like that
 
Holy cr@p, you had an unlucky fall! Really hope you are healed soon. Your new boy looks lovely, I'm sure you will have lots of fun with him when you are better.

At least you can get out a bit now even though you can't fly solo yet. I had to rely in my son to ferry me about when I had a broken collarbone last year. He had no respect or speed bumps! That was also a really stupid accident. I'd survived the X country on MR Big who developed brake failure and decided galloping back to base was a great plan. Then got allocated a titchy little thing for a dressage test .( huge sigh of relief as I joked about needing help to mount up!) .she tripped and slipped in trot and I flew one way whilst she went the other. I crash landed and she got up and took advantage of my removal and started grazing right beside me.

Your new horse looks great and you can while away your period of box rest daydreaming about the adventures you'll have together.
 
YEAH, things are healing OK, think I wont need surgery, which is great, BUT, have had my morphine upped a lot, to help me get through wearing the figure 8 brace, he tightened it up a lot today

Also I managed to pull a little muscle in my neck , and a bunch of big muscles having a coughing fit, talented that's me!

2 weeks to go now, then I can maybe get rid of the cast, maybe one of the slings
 
Good grief! How horrible! I wish you a rapid recovery OP.

I read somewhere that most horse riding injuries requiring medical aid are mounting accidents. It's nowonder though when horsey stands quietly then suddenly shoots off faster than a cat!

Your doing the right thing IMO selling and the grey QH does look a lovely chap who you'll have lots f fun days with.

I'm older and hummmm, chubby so I know how you feel. Sadly, none of us are as supple, elastic or athletic as we used to be and it's a waste of valuable time grieving over what used to be. I thank every day for my girl, we don't compete(though she used to) but spend loads of time hacking out and just being us. She's a stunning 16h SFx sports horse who turns heads but ultimately she's my darling who I love riding.

It's nice to dream but the reality of a seen it, done it, old enough to know better mount is worth a lot more than dreams, they are dreams come real.

I agree, it sounds like you were unlucky. That could have happened on an experienced horse, too. Henry is 21 and is terrible for standing still. He's ok at mounting blocks, but the moment you swing over, he's off! Sorry to hear you've got so badly mashed up from a simple fall - I was hoping for a spectacular story!! Get well soon and enjoy the floaty drugs. Make sure hubby gets a nice Christmas present this year, too. ;)
 
You have my sympathies! Last year I busted and displaced 6 ribs. I'm 50 and they have taken aaaaages to heal because they were all knocked out of position! My riding confidence was shattered even more than my body, but I knew I still wanted to ride, so when a chance conversation offered me a "safe" cob, I tentatively went out on a limb and bought him. My first rides were on the leadrein! My husband was so patient, leading, walking beside me and then as my confidence and trust grew, thinking of schooling exercises to keep my brain thinking about the task in hand rather than the riding. Gradually I exhaled and started believing that my boy really WAS the safe cob I'd been told he was. 14 months down the line, I still click and creak if I move my arm or bend my body into a wrong position but I am having such FUN riding my little coblet.

If you find the right horse, you'll enjoy it again. Perhaps the grey WILL be the one. Good luck with your healing, it's not agony forever....

Ouch, that sounds horrific :eek3:being the top side of fifty sure puts you on the slow track to recover it seems.

I'm holding a pity party for me this morning, I just want to sleep, a full night would be spectacular, but I would accept a night of 2 halves, just tired sore and weepy today.

The cast came off my arm yesterday, and I was kind of expecting to see a white shrivelled looking arm, but instead it's swollen and lumpy and it hurts. They sent me out with a stupid triangular bandage to support it, that was as useful as a chocolate tea pot, so I bought a brace, and that feels so much better, I can take it off to exercise it, or to wash, or when resting, but will wear it while using it for a week or two I think. Last night I wrapped with a polo bandage, that worked really well to keep it comfortable overnight .

The horrible figure eight shoulder brace has to stay a couple more weeks, just to make sure that the clavicle has set for sure, he is very impressed, with how it has done, and is just playing safe!

The broken ribs are still really painful, Oh to be able to have a full nights sleep, rather than a bunch of two hour instalments, and sleeping flat would be a huge bonus. This is taking so much longer than I thought, very frustrating, but progress is being made.
 
Glad you have made some progress after your horrid accident. Nothing worse than pain that does not go away and when you add lack of sleep into the mix its makes things even harder to deal with. Take your time with this and try not to rush to do to much to soon, it will all work out in the end, take care and continue to get better.
