Had a really freaky and scary accident last night.
Was up my riding stables and finished the lesson.
Led the horse went to lead the horse I was about to untack back into his stable, he rushed into his stable, trapping me between the door and him I managed to just almost keep standing up - then he stopped dead, as he stopped dead somehow I lost my balance and tripped/fell over his foot (he's over 16HH and a shire so big foot!!)
To add even more drama - as I fell I knocked the piece of wood that goes across his door, to stop him going out - flying, it flew through the air, hit me right on the head and THEN hit him....he stood there good as gold, and I ended up face down in his stable as it literally knocked me flying but the sound of the wood hitting my hat was horrible, really thought id cracked my helmet. The piece of wood had quite a big bit of metal going across the head which kind of weighs it down and i guess stops the horses chewing it.
Thank goodness I was wearing my hard hat (and body protector) - they both literally saved me from a nasty injury.
Also was so relieved that horse didn't freak out at the piece of wood hitting him......was so proud of him for just standing there - what a scary night that was!!!

I have to, my boy has knocked me out a few times by accident (massive head), after the third time its a requirement ! We are a clumsy as each other, which is funny as he is such a gent!

was certainly a good lesson for me! just a miracle the horse didn't move or bat an eyelid *he's normally the kind that goes mad at the slightest noise in the school) even though he's an older been there done that kind of horse - he once threw me off after hearing a fox....and theres always loads of foxes up there!
to say I have him a huge pat and a hug (for being such a good boy is under estimate( afterwards:)

Glad you are OK from what was a freaky accident in a riding school - though I can't say that I use full body armour everytime I deal with my nags - and have had a few acccidents over the years (from the ground) - but generally only when the horses have departed from their normal routine i.e. we have got them in two hours later then normal etc. and they are over excited, pissed off etc. Spring is suddunly in the air - or someone in the Yard does something stupid (child kicking football....say) If I have help from an outsider or my children in loading or clipping horses, I do now tend to get them to wear a crash helmet - but for the normal day to day bringing in, turning out, mucking out, feeding (now that is where full combat gear might be needed with cranky TB's....) I would not. But I do have an awareness (possibly inbuilt from many years of handling horses) always to expect the unexpected and be aware. And that I guess is the ultimate self preservation tool for dealing with horses - always try to be one step ahead of them if possible! When riding mykids think me mad, when I say watch that paper bag 100 yards in front - and then their horses / ponies typically ignore.......
