Hi guys, really random but I really want to get my pony a leather head collar, the problem is that he is ridiculously hard to catch so you have to keep his head collar on all of the time. I was just wondering how everyone felt about keeping leather head collars on in the field? I have put off buying one for him because I've never thought it was a good idea, I just want to hear everyone else's opinion, thanks in advance x

In my experience, leather snaps a lot easier than nylon or webbing.

Two incidents where the horse spooked.
1) Horse pulled back with leather head collar on, and the headpiece gave way.
2) Horse pulled back with nylon head collar on, and the thick lead rope was the first thing to give way, followed by the brass clip on the end of the rope...
Both time the horse was tied to twine... Obviously hadn't thinned it enough.

I think leather in the field would be safer than a nylon one, but you can get the special ones for turn out.

The first thing I'd be working on was building up a relationship with the horse, and teaching him to catch nicely.

I have had him for a long time now(5yrs) and honestly could not ask for a nicer pony WHEN caught. For some reason in the field he is very angry but scared and the same time, he'll come up to you and then his ears will go back and he tries to kick you, even in the stable he is lovely, just something changes in the field.
