I have a pair of long leather riding boots that I love and want to last forever, but at the moment pretty much every ride results in them being caked in mud. So my question is; how do you all care for your leather boots/chaps in this weather? I want to clean them after every ride, but at the same time, don't want to over clean them (if that's possible!)

What do you use and how often do you clean?!

Shoe shop head back on! (It's been a while since I worked there!)

Give them a good clean with saddle soap, then plaster them in a waxy dressing once dry (this will feed the leather and keep it supple), buff it off and if they're really battered do it a few times.

I don't like coloured polish unless you REALLY need to as it tends to be quite drying. Once they're bone dry give them a few good sprays with a water proof spray (do it outside, you will end up spluttering otherwise!).

The spray will make them easier to clean next time, but i'd really keep them just for riding and bet something rubber to trapse through mud in!

Don't use saddle soap!

Clean them with a damp sponge or cloth then rub original nikwax waterproofing wax into them. Leave for 24 hours to soak in. Then buff to a shine.

The nikwax will seal the wet out. Treat them with the nikwax regularly but you won't need to do it every time you clean them. In between times there are other nikwax products that are good, including a cleaning gel.

If your boots have a waterproof membrane like goretex be especially careful to use suitable products.

Aim to treat them as you would hiking boots rather than fashion shoes or tack. Don't bother with sprays they don't penetrate as well as a wax or cream. Have a look at the nikwax range they are second to none.

Avoid getting your boots wet and don't muck out in them.

Nik Wax not that awful silicone based stuff in an aerosol that will gas you if used indoors I use liquid then work the wax cream in with warm hands:D
