leather riding boots

Has anyone ever had leather riding boots altered in some way?
I got a lovely pair off a friend which lace up on the ankle but they don't have a zip. The foot and ankle part fits fine and the height is fine but the calf is too wide!!
Is there anyway I can get the calf made smaller - is that even possible - or shall I just try to sell them and get something else!!

Yes, I had some altered years ago to fit my calf. It wasn't a saddler who did it, it was somebody who did more general leather work.
