Leather v's Synthetic saddle for golden oldie??

Thought's please...

For a while now when I've taken my horse's (leather) saddle off I've been a bit concerned about how heavy it is!! This is really in relation to his advanced years - 24 - and the first signs of what I think is a bit of a swayed back.

He's had the saddle for 10+ years and it's been checked regular and still fits him very well. It's just the weight issue.

What do you think about getting a lighter synthetic saddle for him from a comfort / weight point of view? Do you think it's worth it with his leather saddle fitting so well etc?

I used to have a leather saddle for mine but switched to a SC leather synthetic mix - much, much lighter!

I'm not looking into a thorowgood due to fitting issues but I woudl definately recommend them - still has the nice leather look but very light and has soft serge panels that are nice on the horses back.

I think if it's not broke don't fix it

does he feel like he is struggling with the extra weight? It's surely only going to be a matter of a few pounds, half a stone at the most? There are a few oldies at my yard who are 26+ and they still getting ridden in leather saddles, one or two of the riders could maybe do with losing a few pounds but I ofcourse keep those comments to myself

like your comments there Silverspring. Appreciate your point about the fractional weight difference. He isn't showing any sign of struggling, is as bouncy as normal etc and doesn't groan or do anything when I put it on / get on. Like you say don't fix it if it aint broke

Absolutly agree - if it aint broke........

It won't be more than 1/2 a stone heavier then the lightest synthetic - you could go on a diet.....

If it fits well and has a wide surface bearing area, leave well alone!
