Leaving a dog alone in a small boot while out on ride

As others have said
- YO (get them to put a sign up saying no dogs/dogs must be in stable/kennel)
- RSPCA
in the other order if you see dog in car on a remotely sunny day.

We all remember those two police dogs from last year.

Well last year at Putsborough car park was a large dog in the back of a 4x4 a back window was slightly down. Dog panting temperature outside was 27%. I went to the pay station and informed them someone had left a dog in the back of the car could they use the loud speakers that the life guards have to ask owner to return to car. He looked at me blank I said then ring the police as I only have a mobile and hardly any battery and scanty signal. He said I'm not ringing the police! what if they're nothing wrong? So I rang the police after walking up a very large hill to get a signal. They said ring the RSPA:eek:
I rang the RSPCA who said is the dog in distress? I said it's panting, Q2. Are the doors locked? A Yes! Well we haven't got anyone in that area:confused::mad: So they rang the man in the kiosk who rang his boss who said he was on the way and DO NOT BREAK THE WINDOW. I asked the RSPCA to ring me back and let me know the outcome. They said the man in the kiosk said they've gone. The same week I returned home to listen to the news that the two police dogs died in the Dog Van just up the road from where I lived.:mad:

So Police said they couldn't do anything and the RSPCA wouldn't come.

Is this the car?

And you said the back window was open?

Sorry I cannot see anything wrong with this.

Perhaps if the dog is left alone at home it destroys the house?

No thats not the car, the boot on that one is bigger will try to find it, hers is more like a box but that is big to her one my 207 has a far bigger boot than hers and I thought mine was small we are not talking a small dog here she is a retreaver x lurtcher that she rescued

In that case, sorry, it is rubbish what she did. Surely there is somewhere she can put the dog like a barn or stable or tackroom or leave it tied up under a tree or something?

That is unacceptable behaviour!

Some people shouldnt own dogs, or any pet for that matter.

Last night I was kept awake all night after next door decided to kick their dog out to stay in their tiny postage stamp of a garden ALL night. This poor dog sat there in the pouring rain howling and yelping all night long, clearly not used to staying out. I dont know if it had any food or water but it certainly had no shelter. Its gone now so I assume owner has decided to let it back in. Thinking about it I have never seen the dog being walked... Some people are downright weird. Why have them if you clearly cant be bothered with them?!

A dog should never ever be left in a car this time of year unless you have a special metallic cover and are able toleave the boot open. That ladies dog trainer friend is an idiot.

I went into a shop today and left windows on my car open and the car was in the shade. A bottle of water that I had was like it has been pored from a kettle.

So Police said they couldn't do anything and the RSPCA wouldn't come.

Sorry by your own words rspca said they haven't got anyone in the area to attend, not wouldn't come??!?!?!?!?! They did however make calls to try to redeem the situation and found out the car had gone!?!?!?!

My dog doesn't like coming riding with me, so I've always left him in the car, with the windows open, I try and park it in the shade, but recently found the perfect solution

Stacey lol BHS would go bonkers over that photo!! :D I however see a cute terrier looking dog :) he's adorable! but please, leave him at home (if those are roads you're on!) :( some drivers are sick and stupid and you could come a cropper and so could everyone in that photo! :( I know it sounds like I'm a real killjoy but I would hate to see anything happen to you guys! :)

I have 2 springer spaniels who generally come everywhere with me. If I need to ride in winter then they stay in the car(if its somewhere they cant come with me), i have a ford focus which has a large boot but I also fold the back seats down, they each have their own beds and something to play or chew on. I brought the car for the boot so they had enough space. If its the summer then they either go in the tack room or a stable, they then just sleep or play fight till I come back.

A dog can literally cook in a hot car in a very short space of time.
To teach the silly bint a lesson, shut her in the tackroom, nail the windows shut and turn the heating up.....that ought to do it!
Next time, call the police straight away, they can and DO come if you stress the animal is in distress.

A couple of years back Bruce Forsythe's daughter had her two yorkies pinched out the back of her car in Tesco's down the road from us.
Just another good reason to NEVER leave your dog alone in the car.

Problem is that some people just hate to be told or to be in the wrong. It makes them more stubborn.Arrogance & stupidity are a terrible mix. Poor little dog.

She got them back (I know thats not the point) and then appeard on "it's me or the dog" with Victoria Stillwell as the dogs were so frightend of strangers.

I don't understand why, if you're planning to ride out, you cannot just leave you dog/s at home???? If they chew unattended at home, train them to accept a crate.

People at our yard sometimes leave their dog in their stable when they hack out, but it's not much fun for the rest of us left listening to constant yapping, whining and/or barking until their owners return.

And there's no way I'd hack out leaving my dogs in my car - even in the shade with windows wide open. What would happen if you had an accident out riding and your dogs were left stranded for longer than you planned? Nah, I'd rather leave them at home!

This is what I can't get my head around  Do livery yard owners really want other peoples dogs at their yard, whether they be wandering around, locked in stables or in their owners cars?

The trouble is the farmer who owns the place does not get involved, she had a dog before this one and he was just lifeless, he passed away and within a week she had this very young dog not quite a year full of life and SHE wants it to be a yard dog, she walks aground with a wheelbarrow or buckets of water with the B....Y dog, who drags her all over the place and then all we get is screaming as she yells at the dog, with out being funny she is only about 4ft 5 and the dog is to big for her so pulls her around then she puts in back in the boot ARRR :(

Eeek... she sounds a total nightmare

Yes! This is an illegal act.....I'd have rung either the police or the RSPCA

this is an excerpt from the RSPCA website...

In warm sunny weather cars become ovens, with temperatures soaring to 120°F/49°C or even higher. Because of this, the RSPCA advises that animals are never left inside cars.

If an animal left in a car is panting for breath it may be starting to suffer from heatstroke, which can kill an animal very quickly.

Leaving windows open or putting a bowl of water in the car does not help.

As the quote says "The RSPCA "ADVISES" that dogs are not left in cars

Owners who put an animal at risk by leaving it inside a locked car could face prosecution.
End of Quote

I quite agree that leaving a dog in a boot for a period of time is inexcusable but I don't think the act of leaving a dog in a boot is illegal per se more the fact if it develops into the act of animal cruelty. Ie 20 minutes on a winters day may not be cruel however 20 mins in the heat of summer would be. If just leaving a dog in a boot was illegal how would security guards/police dogs be allowed to operate.
