My 2 horses are turned out 24/7 in summer along with my friends horse.
She has suddendly decided that cos her horse's legs are "covered in lumps & bumps" she is going to put brushing boots on him.

She is going on holiday next week for 2 weeks and I'm looking after him.
I would never put boots on 24/7 ...... (but i'm not sure why!)

Opinions please ....

Because they will rub, they will get dirt/insects etc under them etc and will cause far more problems than they will solve

Exactly. Add grass seeds to that and you have a recipe for disaster!

I wouldn't leave them on 24/7. A lady down the road left them on one of hers (My friends horse that was on loan to her) and he was left with scars from how badly they rubbed. Especially if it gets hot, they'll rub badly! Not to mention all the germs and dirt and nasty stuff that'll get caught in them! I'd take them off while she's away and just explain you didn't feel comfortable leaving them on. If he gets hurt (From brushing boots rubbing) while she's away you'll have to deal with it.

bad idea, i was always taught that when u take boots off after a hack etc that u just rub the horses leg to encorouge circulation. dont know how much truth is in this. hel prob be prone to puncture wounds under there with things getting stuck under them. just tell the owner a story of sum1 you know doing what she is doing and her horses legs being in a right state after. doesnt have to be true just to outline the fact without seeming you telling her what to do

mine wear boots in the field but they aren't out 24/7. even with this have to take them off my TB if its hot coz they rub him. how often will you be checking the horse- if once a day you could take them off a while and let legs breath a bit?

mine has boots on while being turned out but she is only out for 8 hours max?
only fronts aswell as she has a previous scar on her back leg which sometimes rubs if its hot weather!

Mine wear brushing boots at all time when out in the field! he's far to accident prone not to! Ive just spent £80 on some Breathable tzone boots and they are fab! he legs stay really cool under them. I check him at least twice a day, if not more so his boots are removed them, and cleaned out etc, he has a different pair to be ridden in. ive not had any problems with him wearing them, and £80 is chepper than lots of vet visits!

Having spoken to a vet about this, these "breathable" boots are really not as breathable as one might think. It can be really bad for the tendons if you leave boots on all the time. Tendon problems are going to be far worse than a few scratches! And as already mentioned, all the grime that get's caught under them can rub and become uncomfortable.

At my dressage livery yard all the horses (except one which is wrapped in cotton wool!) go out without boots on, they are horses at the end of the day, I would rather mine was comfortable and happy out in the field and accept that yes, sometimes accidents can happen.
