I have to leave my dog alone for 8 hours or possibly nine. Going up to London and have no one to look after him or look in. Did think about kennels for one night but he has been a rescue dog so didnt want to do this. Originally thought it would be about 6 hours but train times now longer than I thought due to having to change onto a blooming bus for part of the journey! i am thinking of cancelling my visit but will lose a lot of money on concert tickets. Am I being too over the top, have never left any of my dogs for longer than 5 hours before and have not left this one for longer than 3 so far as not been necessary before

Could you get a dog sitter to call in at lunchtime even if its just to let the dog out in garden for ten mins.
Its a long timeto go with out a toilet break.

Know what you mean about not wanting to put in kennels: have you thought about someone that might offer this as a professional service? I'd be asking at your vets to see if they'd recommend anyone that could come to your home and see to dog/s whilst you're away.

I've got a rescue too, and certainly wouldn't dare leave her in kennels coz she'd be a nervous wreck.

If you do have someone to come in and walk or whatever, then I'd be inclined to ask them to pop round and meet doggy/s first and everyone get to know each other, then the whole thing will be much more relaxed. They'd no doubt suggest this anyway.

Problem is im talking about Sunday here, this Sunday.Just checked the trains on the net and found out on the Sunday only they are running a bus service part of the way !
Putting another 2 hours on the day, I could have coped with him being in for 5-6 hours.
Dont know anhyone who would pop in and Im not sure he would let anyone in he didnt know! He does go 12 hours overnight without getting off the bed .

Mmmmm, difficult one innit. Being left without "loo" facilities overnight is one thing, but during the daytime if he's used to going out for the necessary it will be difficult for him, especially without your being there as the stress of it may make him be a dirty boy indoors, and it won't be that he's doing it deliberately so you'll have to expect this - you could put down a sort of tray for him somewhere so he feels reassured that he can "go" there - maybe a tarpaulin with some earth/leaves etc in a corner or something?

The other thing is that you can get something called a "DAP" (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) dispenser. This replicates the hormone that the female dog gives off to calm her puppies and its in a dispenser thing which you plug into a power socket and leave on and it dispenses into the air. You'd need to get one tomorrow (Sat) ASAP to start him on it and get him chilled out.

The other thing is to perhaps leave on a radio - perhaps in a bedroom upstairs rather than the room he's actually in? That way he won't feel so alone in the house and the noise might just reassure him that there's someone around.

He'll be fine - go and enjoy yourself and don't spend your time worrying about him!

I bet he will spend the whole time fast asleep on the sofa glad for a bit of peace!! :p

But if you are really worried, can't you ask a friend to have him for a day?

I suppose Im worrying too much. He will probably be happier at home than anywhere.
Its the toilet situation that could be difficult as cant leave back door open! All the time im away Ill be worrying about him though, I managed to get over it with my last dogs by leaving in kennels overnight but there were two of them, this little lad is quite clingy and loves his home, we'll have to do it sometime if we want to go abroad. I must grit my teeth and do it I think! Its not every day.

Worst case scenario - he will mess on the floor.

Buy cleaning supplies, don't bring anyone not dog-proof home!

He'll cope, and will enjoy whatever treat/new toy you buy him to make up for the guilt you will inevitably feel :D:D

Can you have a dog flap put in? I have one and it saves me worrying about them going out for a wee. Feel much less worried knowing that they have the run of the house and garden when I'm out.
