Leaving feed bowls in the field....??

do you do it? Bob is out on his own at night so theoretically I could leave his feed out with him, rather than waiting for him to eat.

At the moment I have an ordinary plastic feed bucket - would you leave this out? Or if you were going to do it, would you only leave one of the rubber feed skips you can get?

When my two are out they are fed from rubber skips - they are 4 year olds and like to play with them. I am able to put feeds in and leave them to eat nicely and collect the bowls later.

Other alternative to the skip are the plastic flexible tubs - you can get them in DIY shops, far cheaper than the equine places and still in funky colours.
 
I never leave feed bowls in the stable or field overnight.
I know people do with no harm but I just don't! I'd use one of the soft rubber ones if I did.
 
If Skye is by her self i have done, dont mind leaving the plastic buckets out but i always take the handles off just incase of mishap. My old horse there is no way you could have left a bucket with him as he would mess and play with it till it was completely destroyed!!
 
I had never considered not doing this, I regulary leave buckets in his stable overnight. As do all people on my yard, never had a problem with this. In the field we just empty the buckets onto the floor!
 
I leave feed buckets in stables overnight - and would leave in field if my horses were out, but I have the rubber indestructable (sp) ones and my mare can be extremely destructive if she gets bored

I usually do this in the field too, but now it is getting wetter it is very muddy out there?

I think a rubber feed bowl seems to be the way ahead, I like the idea of the cheaper ones from a DIY place though

We leave ours out, although they are of the hang over the fence variety. Te only reason I wouldn't leave plastic ones out is because they'd likely get blown away. Like to leave mine in the stables sometimes too - gives him something to hit me in the face with in the morning!!

Guess the only issue with the plastic ones is they would probably blow away

I always use rubber ones out of habbit and last for years so you get your monies worth

I do...sometimes but do have to go hunting for them sometimes when it has been windy, the black skip type ones wont blow away but I cant get all his food in them, plus they get all manky and sticky on the handles.

Rubber skips are the only thing I can use, no danger to the horses, plus, when they fill with ice and snow it is simple to 'pop' the frozen stuff out. Can't do that with a bucket.
 
I leave feed bowls in stables and fields. Mine have the black rubber skips or flexible plastic tubtrugs.

Is it just me who finds the black rubber tyre skips impossible to clean properly? You leave em out in the field and they get covered in mud any they never quite recover properly

My horse is very accident/injury/disease prone so a plastic bucket in the field/stable would give her the perfect opportunity to see her favourite "aunty" (vet!)
I happily leave tubtrugs and rubber feed skips in with her, but anything else is taken out.

I use rubber buckets (skips). I feed along fencelines of my fields. Horses are all fed from my huge bucket that I drag along with me. Once finished getting round all the fields, the ones I fed first are usually finished, so then I just walk around all the fields and retrieve the rubber buckets and lay them back along the fencelines upside down, ready for the next feed time.

Plastic buckets blow away, get squashed and when it's cold you can't get the ice out easily. Rubber buckets are great.
 
I wouldn't leave the feed bowl in the field.

Why? Well no.1 I like to monitor the horse whilst it's eating. No. 2 it's just lazy.

Pick it up, wash it and have it ready for next time.....

My horse has about 1.5kg of fibre in his breakfast, unfortunately I dont have time to wait around for him all morning to eat it

I use one of the Tub trug things, it goes in the field with him, gets brought in with him and soaked whilst I ride, then gets left in his stable with him overnight as he picks at his feed overnight

I have enough bowls that I leave them in the field and swap it for a full one the next morning.

I use a tyre to put the bowl in which stops it from getting trodden on and squashed/tipped over or any accidents..
 
I use little tub trugs - one has hers left in the field, one gets his dumped into a trye bucket. All are rinsed out before new feeds are made.

Ditto this, mine also have little tub trugs with their horsehage in with stay in the field with them.
 
Personally, just through being not to as a child, I wouldn't leave a horse unattended whilst eating from a bucket. I worry they would choke if I went home and left! I have seen choke too many times to risk it. That said, if it was just fibre beet or a hugh bucket of chaff or hay replacer I would leave it in a tub trug.
 
I agree with you as my horse has suffered from choke twice before, however that was on Readigrass which was soaked and before that on Hifi. Hence I wet everything. But I do leave the feed buckets in the field, they are the black rubber ones and my two love playing with them.
 
My mare cant manage grass due to poor teeth (shes 31!) so she is left with a huge tub trug full of feed in her field to last her till shes brought in. It takes her all day to eat it. I cant stay there to watch her as I have to go to work

I would not leave a bucket with a metal handle in their paddock or stable, but have no problem leaving tub trugs or rubber skips.

My (well, loaned) shetland does that!! She loves rolling with her head in the bucket! Must be a shettie thing!
