Leaving fly masks on at night

Do any of you leave fly masks on at night when your horse is turned out? Mine wears one during the summer and also at times in winter as he gets a runny eye when it’s windy or bright sunshine (vets advice). He’s now living out overnight so I’ve been taking it off at night but where it’s been windy recently his eye has started running again.

Do any of you leave masks on overnight in the field?

err yes he wears it over night... have taken it off for a bit while the weather is crap

No. I always take JB's off at night to give him a reast from it as it's a full face mask. Lol he looks like Hanable Lecter

I don't use fly masks but a lot of people around here leave them on overnight. Personally I wonder about their vision when they are on during the night but as I say I have no personal experience with them. Sorry, not a great deal of help!

I sometimes leave them on at night providing it's not wet. Just depends on how late I check them and how bad the flies are

I always leave masks on my lot at night, as the midges are at their worst late at night and at dawn, and as much as I love them I am not going out at 11pm and 4am!

They have never had any problems, but if I had a new horse in, I would make sure it was familiar with its field boundaries before leaving a mask on at night. My lot are all very sensible and dont hoolie around at night so I dont worry.

Mine wear them 24/7 (except when they remove them whilst rolling

) from about may til september and I've never had a problem. 2 of them have ears and the other 2 have ears and nose as they get burnt otherwise.

Mine wears his 24/7. I take it off 3 days a week when i groom him etc.. it gets a quick dunk to get the dust out then hung up to dry whilst i'm grooming/riding or mucking out.

I was always led to believe that you shouldn't have them on 24/7 as it can damage their eye sight.

I tried to leave it on at night but its never on in the morning and i can never find the damm thing

One of mine has his one 24/7 at the moment, until his eye infection clears up completely then I will see how he goes with it on dairly.

I have a horse who has uveitis, she is turned out at night in a flymask and is in a shaded stable during the day. Apert from that she leads a totally normal life and is out eventing twice a month.

All 5 of mine start with theirs on until my section b goes round and removes the others one by one with his teeth. Soon the only one wearing one is him. I dream of 24/7!
