Leaving Horse in Stable during the Day

Reading all of your replies, I don't feel quite so bad about my mare being left in today! Was intending to go & put her out but am stuck at home with poorly son!

Depends on the horse i guess. Realise they don't melt in the wind but sometimes you do have to follow yard policy. There's a couple of yards round here who struggle in winter in foul weather as the yards operate a "no turnout or limited turnout" rule. There you just don't have a choice whether you want them out or not.

One of mine is out 24/7, the other is in a lot of the time in winter due to the fact he loathes being out in shitty weather although will quite happily hunt or hack in it, just doesn't like standing in it. Friends mare is just the same. So i ride him early, get him mucked out and put in lots of haylage and water and then redo him again at 5pm. No hard feed is given during the day.

Even if it snows mine goes out for a few hours, he's evil if he's left in all day. He tolerates it and doesn't stress, he'll eat all his food and doesn't weave/crib/box walk or anything but boy do I get told off for it when I arrive.

In previous yards where i had an option to keep him in or out I had to DRAG him into the field if it was raining. Took me 20 minutes to go 20 yards

So he's be kept in with loads of hay. He didn't get a lunch in the field so don't see why he should get one in the stable

Mine love being in and are quite happy all day as long as there is company, hay and water. I left them in this moring as it was blowing a gale, I'll turn them out for an hour or so at 4pm while I muck out to stretch their legs

Ditto my last horse would stress something cronic if i left him in and he was the only one in but my new mare sometimes would rather be left in with a haylege net.
If its gale weather or really wet and misserable ill leave her in with 2 haylege nets one at either end of the stable to encourage her to move around, a treat toy ball to play with and breckfast and ill ask someone to feed her a lunch and another hay net mid afternoon and then when i get up about 5ish ill ride to get her legs streched. She loves it. I dont see the point in turning them out in the rain to soak rugs and for them to misserable but some horses dont mind.

Mine are in today as fields rather wet, they all get a large net of hay each along with whatever they left the night before, I don't change their feeds, they still have the normal two (breakfast and tea).

Mine are out even when there IS snow.

Mine is in today. My YO turns her out in the morning and brings her in before I finish work during winter but I got a txt this morning saying they decided it is too windy and dangerous to turnout this morning so they are all staying in and have been given hay. I'll just have lots to muckout later.

I don't even HAVE a stable!!! Poor buggers are out in all weathers. To be honest I think it is much better for them but all horses are different.

Monty was a bit peeved when he first lived out 24/7 but he soon got used to it and when he was in at night he was buted and retired due to his stiff legs. He's been living out for 3 years and he is a different horse - more relaxed, not medicated and back to hacking and light schooling.

Zoom is in the barn at the moment since she had a kick to the hock. She crazy bored. She would much rather be out in a gale then bored in a stable.

I am reiterating all horses are different since I don't want people to think I am critising those who keep them in.

Tyler almost throws a strop when put out in bad weather. He loved his 24/7 turnout over the summer, but was des[erate to go in his stable as the weather turned chilly. MY b oy just loves his bed.

Ufortuantely for him he always gets an hour or two turnout to keep his legs stretched and allow me to muck out

Mine all live out 24/7 even if clipped (but heavily rugged!) and hate coming in, but if i have to get them in...i.e. for hunt/shoot/hurricane/ect then i leave them with enough hay to sink a ship and leave them to it. I find they only start kicking up a fuss when they see someone in the yard..so we resort to sneaking out the back door where they can't see us from the yard!
