My horse has just been 'perscribed' a months field rest after some box rest to see if his leg will come right before we scan etc which we don't really want to do..
Anyway he is not going out without boots on and I have been told to boot him up, however I know I won't get near the bloody thing for a few days so what boots will be best to leave on, when he is out 24/7 he normally has club boots on all round but I was thinking maybe wrap type boots would offer more support?

Cook his tendons? I think medically they have to reach 30oc before cooking.

I would buy good quality air cooled ones like premier equine and use those, I would imagine you would at least be seeing home once a day? I'd catch, and groom under the boots

Do you think trizone air cooled would be good then? After the first 24hours he will come into the stables for an hour for his dinner so can have them off then!

Nope, unless you want legs like dee has

NOT my doing might i say!

Samsbilly, I'm sorry if I offend you but that sort of statement really annoys me.

You put boots on your horses legs but reckon they 'don't get hot at all.'
Are they magic boots, or does your horse have magic legs? As for them to disregard the laws of physics in this way they must be one or the other.

If you weigh up all the options and info, and STILL decide to boot horses for long periods of time, well that's up to you. But they WILL get hot and they WILL rub.

Unfortunately with our weather as it is at the moment most fields are pretty darn muddy and it is very easy for dirt and grit to work their way up and under the boot.

If you absolutely have to boot up how about mud chaps. Does your horse have his shoes on? Will you be using Sedalin or similar when he first goes out?

I tend to think boots left on for turn out do more harm than good but if your vet is telling you to boot it would be worth asking if they have any recommendation.

Agree 100%. If the horse is well enough to be in the field, then the liklihood of boots protecting any tendon damage is minimal, and the negativities in my mind outweight the positives for wearing boots. Dee wore boots the first time out in 6 months and also the other day as her field was partially flooded, once i realised she wasnt going to mess out they came off quickly.

Oh poor Dee :(

OP what are you using the boots for? What are you expecting him to do??

I really would not have boots on 24hr a day...

took me a year to rehab dee's legs better, the only tell tale signs of how bad they were is the white hair....imagine red, bleeding sore legs OP. I have no idea what actually happened as in hospital at the time but someone who was working at the yard told me as soon as i started trying to find out. :(

Last time he went without boots he made a 6inch cut down his front leg!
DD my Irish boy has simular legs to dees, didn't think it was caused by boots tho?!!

Dee's was bandages that got wet out hacking, left on over night... they were taken off the next day and the skin came away with them...

Damp boots/bandages are very BAD news, why i will never use a tail bandage.

ETA - they are more visable here

I was very lucky there was no lasting damage

Petal style over reach boots rub least. I'd go for brushing rather than tendon boots as softer less likely to rub but still protection and support.

Oh I wonder if the same thing happened to Mine then before I got him, he rarely wears boots now only when mega fresh and going out!

Crazy tb how ever is a knobber, he will do something hideous to himself but I am very anal about catching an drying legs/ changing boots.. It will just be the first 24 hours I won't get near him he has been box rest / walker for a while and had no turnout.

Dee's legs are thorough washed and died after every turnout and exercise to keep them in good condition. I also massage them weekly and use a revitalising wash on them every few weeks. I might be anal about it but i fought to get them to heal.

I would put them on for an hour or two when he first goes out, I am sure you will be able to catch him with bribery, or put him in a smaller turnout area. I wouldn't leave boots on apart from overreach boots, because of rubbing and mud rather than tendon 'cooking'.
