Hi all

I'm off for a new years eve break. I don't usually leave my horse so this is a nerve wracking first. My yard friend is seeing to him new years day. My question is.....
Do u think my food will be ok if I make it up the night before. So I will make it nee years eve and he will have it new years day eve. (So 24hrs on).? He has fastfibre which is soaked mixed with Alfa original .....

I often do that if I am going away overnight etc and a friend or family member is feeding mine- have done for many years.
Mainly because I want to make things as easy as possible for who ever is feeding him. I make them up, cover them with a bucket cover and then leave them in a feed bin ready to use.
Others on here may disagree, but mine has never came to any harm after eating a feed made up a day in advance

Thanks for your replt.. that's how I feel... I want to make things as easy as poss. It's only one night. My worry was cause it is soaked food mainly

It'll be fine, I always make mine up and soak it in the morning to feed that evening and the next morning - it might just need a good stir before feeding though :)

It will be fine just make sure it's covered either put it inside the feed bin or use a bucket cover to stop vermin getting on to the feed.

I'm sure your horsey friend won't mind making the feed for you if you leave instructions but I understand your trying to make it easy for her.

Our entire DIY yard leaves the next morning's breakfasts made up and covered outside the stables. Then who ever is there first feeds all of them. A variety of types of feeds and no problems.

I always leave my horses feed that I've prepared sometimes as early as 4pm until the next morning dampened so its easier for my friend to just drop it over the stable door. Has never done him any harm before.

Sorry guys, I don't like doing it. I think it is staler and yukky when fed, especially if dampened.

ps, I am lucky in that ours are at home and we don't have to cross this bridge though, but I would really not like leaving feed out. We used to have DIYs that did, and had a lot more mice around in those days too!

I do this all the time. I work full time and have a horse on DIY so have to do this to save time. Most of the yard do this in fact.

I do it too, I make my feed up one evening to be fed the next (the beet takes 24 hours to soak anyway). If it tastes fusty then he just wouldn't eat it.

All our feeds morning and evenings are made up 24 hrs before. We have evening feeds underneath the ply breakfasts on top so the answer is yes only don't mix it or add water best let the person doing it add it or it will go soggy

Ours does not go stale or yuky as it has covers on and water / sugarbeet is added as feeds are dished out .

this is our feedroom. no horse has to wait for its feed in the mornings as they are ready to add water and dish , rather than waiting 25 minutes for me to make them all up and add supplements then add water to dish. Me and my yards I have been too have been doing that since 1979 . No horse has ever turned his nose up at the feed because made up night before sorry about the light its not good lighting for the phone the sugar beet is on the end and evenings are under the mornigs

That I could cope with, its the ones that add sugarbeet etc and dampen it that revolts me - bit like cereal left with milk in, fine to eat, but yukky. Our livery used to leave it uncovered too, so mice could go in it.

Each to his own, only my opinion, and as I said, I'm lucky to always feed my own on my own yard, so don't have to cross that bridge.

I make a bucket of FF or Speedi beet, enough for my ponies for three/four days!! only do this in winter .............and wow, they are still alive, been doing it for years and years. It doesn't go yucky or stale or anything.

I think this is fine in winter. I just try not to make feeds too far in advance in summer so they aren't sat around in the heat ( ha ha with our summers??? Who am I kidding!!!!) 😄

I make up dried feed elements up to a week in advance and so long as the feed is stored in dark, dry and cool conditions I've not had any problems - been doing this for near on a year now.

None of my feeds have mollasses or pellets in and any wet elements are added at feeding time (at the moment, only a liquid Vit E supplement and Apple Cider Vinegar for one horse).

My friend puts nuts, chaff, garlic, oil and limestone flour - mixes and leaves under a cover. In the morning I just add water and give it a stir. If you could do something similar, even if you leave the fast fibre seperate, measure all other feeds so she would just have to add together? Mine are always fine though :) xx

Leaving dry food and dry supplements is no different than the feed in a bin / supplement pot

Supplements are stored in their pot - feed is either in a bin or kept in a bag opened. I see no different whether the feed is put in a feed bucket for the night ready for the morning with a cover or left in the bin.
only when wet is added like sugar beet or water etc does it start to go smelly and soggy
