My wonderful, charming, quiet, patient, forgiving farrier is coming to shoe the mad one on Sunday. Not only does he come at 5.30 on a sunday morning to fit in with my shifts, it will also be the last time i use him as i'm moving towards reading. (unfortunately, i couldn't persuade him to move to)
He's done wonders with my boy, who has always been difficult, and i'd really like to get him a gift that says a special thank you. But i have no idea what?!

I'm dreading ever finding anyone else that will come within 20ft of his hooves, so much so, i'm half tempted to box him up the motorway every six weeks!

Seriously though, if anyone has any ideas it'd be very much appreciated!

I was thinking bottle of alcohol - the parents have just come back from winter in France with car filled to bursting with red wine, have a feeling a couple of bottles may be disappearing!

I've had many farriers for this one, some have refused to come back to him, some have been 'incredibly busy' when i've tried to book in again, and some have been kicked of my yard half way through shoeing (one hit him round the head with a file cause he wouldn't stand still)
But, my current farrier is soo brilliant, he just puts up with it and tells him in a quiet but firm voice when enough is enough.

Gonna miss him soooo sooo much.
 
I moved from Gloucestershire to Devon - and for he first two shoeings when I moved I did bus him back to glos. It was such a relief knowing that was an option until I found someone I could trust down here. My farrier was fantastic, turned up on time, was calm, careful and really seemed to love horses. I would have loved to move my farrier with horses to Devon - my OH might have complained though
 
I would go with the booze too! How heartbeaking for you - when you find one so good that understands your horse - know how you feel - I would be distraught if I had to change farrier now as mine is great too!

I'm finding out the hard way that locating a good, patient farrier to come and shoe your horses is one of the hardest things ever! I would probably box back to see yours every 6 weeks!
 
I got my farrier some innersole electric boot warmers for the winter (get them from ski shops) and a bottle of Jack Daniels. I used to live just outside Reading, many years ago but I believe my old farrier is still there, his name is Ginger and his forge is down Sandy Lane in Wokingham, he was very good and patient with my absolute [****] of a horse he would kick and then try to de-trouser anyone doing his feet :-(
 
You never know about booze these days - I know one person who bought a big bottle of very nice whiskey for a recovering alcoholic . . .

A ton of gift certificates? In this country we're all addicted to drive thru coffee shops so that always works but not so easy in England.

A really nice work jacket? Bit pricey but useful.

Some sort of personalised equipment? Like a custom made/nameplated farrier's box?

One of those plug in car seat massager/warmers?

Whatever you go with, I'm sure he'd appreciate a really nice card, too, telling him how grateful you are and praising his skill. Everyone likes a compliment.

i would defo go for personnel touch of card will note and really can't go wrong with booze. Also get him to recommend new farrier before he leaves as he know horse...
