Well I'm leaving for Ireland tomorrow (pray for sun!) and won't be back til Tuesday. I'm leaving my horse in the field 24/7 as usual. She will be checked by YO in the morning, friend in the evening and my mum will drive by the field to check for any obvious issues.

Now she's 23 years old and a tad accident prone (has been her whole life) I fully intend to spend this evening playing with her, going on a fun hack then when I put her bak out I'll say my goodbyes...is it wrong that whenever I leave her for a few days I do this? By say goodbye I mean just incase something happens when I'm away

I have this paranonia that she will get hurt or lie down and not be able to get back up (having seen it before in older horses) I feel I am being far too precious, she's only 23 after all but I know I would feel soo guilty if anything happened and I wasn't there to help

My YO and family have been given strict instructions that should anything happen no heroic measures should be taken, if the vet suggests PTS it should be done asap. I wish I wasn't such a worrier!

no its not wrong as long as someone is looking on her she be ok,
but if it was me i would write a small agreement regards to if anything happens and she has to be put to sleep then your yo or your mum has permission to put to sleep,
i dont know if they are stricked regards to other people given permission to put to sleep
she be fine !!!!!

The YO actually put that in our livery agreement, it makes sense as she could struggle to get in contact with some owners (unlike me who has my mobile next to me at all times!) and if the horse had say a broken leg she would have to order to the vet to PTS on behalf of the owner. It's all rather depressing! Fingers crossed she can last a whole 4 days without me chekcing on her

Magic - a holiday is what non-horsey people do for at least 2 weeks a year. they jet off usually to somewhere sunny after buying lots of new clothes etc. I'm not sure you can call Ireland a holiday...no jet, no new clothes...hmmm...let's call it an excursion!

No, I always say my "goodbye's" when I leave mine (even overnight!). My old boy is 28 and I hate leaving him and I constantly worry about him while i'm away. I have written out instructions should anything happen to him while i'm not there and have left them in my stable. Thankfully i'm not going away till next year now!

Mine is 27 and I do exactly the same. I also leave a full set of notes and strict instructions as to what to do in an emergency (inc having her PTS if necessary). If there is more than one person checking her, I draw up a rota and ask several other people as back up - just in case!

Don't know why I bother, no one can ever catch the bl**dy thing

Yes, it's in our livery agreement too, and I think everyone should have it. It's not often that OH or me are not contactable by phone - but if something happened to madam I'd hate her to suffer while the YO tried to get hold of us.
I'm the most stressed out owner ever - she's on a great yard where they spoil her and treat her like their own, but I hate going away in case she does something stupid.
We're going to be away for four days at the end of the month and as it's mid show season I'm getting the YM to ride her a couple of times. I'm already fretting that she'll be pain in the bum (she's not that keen on tall men with long, strong legs

I did it with Ted everytime I went to see my BF in Wales, Id go to the yard, say good bye, Tell him I loved him and I always would.. Usually get upset. But I was greifing in advance for him.

He was always still there when I got back. And I just couldnt get out of the habit.

Youll have a wonderful time in Ireland!

Eh?

You have a horse and can afford a holiday?

Chuff me.....

I see no probs in that at all......people on our yard regularly go away in the summer when the horses are living out and as long as people know they are away everyone keeps an eye out.

It's terribly morbid but I always do it!

Monty is 28 and I always say my final goodbyes before I go away. My friend looks after the ponies for me and I always tell her that I don't expect him to be there when I get back, mainly so that if she did have to make a decision, she would hopefully not feel as bad about it.

If it makes you feel better to say goodbye before you go then why not.
I don't go quite that far as my boy is only 14 at the moment - I'm worse with my elderly cats - but I do like to spend a bit of quality time with him before I go away just in case.

However I'm sure you'll have a lovely time and she'll be absolutely fine

hol-i-day...mmm, ive heard of this word, but i thought it was just a tale, a lovely fairystory...and its TRUE you say?!

I try to make each day a good one - you never know what is going to happen no matter how young/fit an animal is.
Not easy but means no additional worry when going away!

So glad I'm not the only one! I feel like a right paranoid freak about these things, I honestly never used to be like this with my young horses it's just as she gets older and I know how often she is ain a scrape

I will enjoy my excursion/holiday once I'm away from the yard, I just feel a bit sick at the thought of what might happen. Sometime I wish I didn't care so much! I feel a little better knowing I'm not the only freak

thanks guys

I hate leaving my animals, horses and dogs. Usually a good friend moves in and animals sits. I always make sure my vets know that she and they have authority to do whatever necessary for my animals in my absence. So you're definitely not the only one
