Yes it used to be commonplace years ago, as did Bleeding for laminitics (I can still remember seeing this from pony club days - it was proper gory stuff which no doubt would be anathema to the average teenager nowadays).

I had a client who had his leg amputated below the knee and the hospital used leeches to aid blood flow for healing. Unfortunately his leg was also leaking a lot of fluid and the leeches drowned as they couldn't breathe
He found it really funny.
