Hi,

We are looking for a bit of an adventure this summer and was wondering if anyone has travelled on horseback from Yorkshire to Cumbria (or a similar distance/place and obviously with stops in between!) We were planning a more rural route possibly through the dales, overal 100 miles-ish. Does this sound crazy?

Thanks

I am fairly sure that when a heavy horse yard moved from Scotland to Cumbria they hacked down over a long period. Will go and see if I can find it.

ETA: found it "The Great Migration" - go on the history page of Cumbrian Heavy Horses. So if they can do it from Skye to the West of Cumbria then...

No way! Cumbrian Heavy Horses is like 10 miles from my home in West Cumbria! Will have to check this out. Thanks :)

I think I'm going to book a trekking holiday with the heavy horses as a sedate hen weekend... looks and sounds fab!

A trek from Leeds to the Lake District sounds amazing - best of luck!

Where are you then? We live on the west coast around 5 miles from Heavy Horses.

I think you could do it, because you could come up to Haverthwaite from Kirkby Lonsdale way then to Coniston area and up around Eskdale. I am sure you could get from Settle to K.L. Not sure from Leeds to Settle.

Hope you get to do that.

The Pennine Bridleway is nearly complete up to Cumbria now:

There's a link path from the Bradford area, so depending on where you are in Leeds it shouldn't be much of a stretch to join up with that.

Tis all very exciting and has been a long time coming. They've had to finish it off on a bit of a shoestring by the looks of it.
