Hi i would like some peoples opinions please
I have a mare on loan she is lovely in every way shes not been right and been seen by a vet and put on antibiotics for around 2 weeks then another 2 weeks bloods were took and indicated infection she finished the course and is alot happier in herself however the snot has not gone and when eating feed pours out and when being rode in her self she is happy and seems happy when rode .. People who know her have said shes always been the same since they have known her with the snotty nose and she has been seen before by a vet for this and was told nothing to worry about after reading online i think the next step is the dentist and then the vet for the scoup or scope whichever it is to check further has anyone elses horse been like this as ive never seen any with it but like i say she is very happy but something must not be right for this snot to still be about and always has been it is not strangles she was checked and bloods stated infection which she has finished and was told she didnt need no more now?

When my horse had the same it was a guttural pouch infection but they are not that common so I would get the vet to look in the mouth then they might x ray the head if they suspect something is going on that's what they did with mine, they didnt find anything so they scoped him and found the infection.

Quite often antibiotics alone won't clear a guttural pouch infection they flush the area several times, my horse had about 80 chondroids in his pouch which are solid lumps of pus, they had to be removed with a special tool that goes in with the scope.

Charlie Horse had this, he was scoped, swabbed and X rayed. The vet found... nothing! He seemed well in himself, so he was swabbed a second time, just in case, but other than that was ridden gently. It cleared over about 9 months and we never did find out what it was.

Another horse I knew had an infected sinus. He had a hold drilled in his head between his eyes, looked like he had been shot! He had drains and flushes, it was messy, but healed really well. About 9 months later, you couldn't tell anything was wrong at all.

A 3rd, he had an infected tooth root. It was removed and a drain hole in his lower jaw, that never healed up. He needed cleaning rigorously twice a day or it would smell. They tried loads of treatment, but he seemed well in himself and had a normal workload, so simply had years of having his lower jaw cleared twice daily. He was still prone to a snotty nose, but the vets said to just keep cleaning.

My gelding had an on and off snotty nostril which was worse in the winter/when stabled, I wouldn't say he was ever 'pouring' snot, but enough to be a concern and quite smelly too. Dentist suspected a cracked tooth or rotten upper jaw tooth root, had a good look under sedation but couldn't see any cracked teeth or other obvious issue so he went for a CT scan which revealed a mass in his nasal cavity. Surgery wasn't recommended so he lives with it, he's lives out now which seems to help. I think his case is quite unusual though. Having dentist out for yours is a good idea, hopefully they will be able to help you find the issue. In the meantime feeding from the ground as much as possible is probably a good idea to help with draining.
