Left on the verge: The approaching equine crisis in England and Wales

Oh fgs cptrayes - I SAID IT IS NOT SAFE FOR THE PERSON PTS-ING the horse! Not that it's not safe or effective for the horse!

So you think someone would be OK with thinking that there is a possibility of seeing their dead horse fall on the knackerman, do you?

Peeps out there needing to call the hunt any time soon - it doesn't happen. Captive bolt shooting of horse is fine!

I think too, cut price euthanasia should be available to low income owners. Personally, I'd starve before I left a horse to starve or dumped it, & the other end of the spectrum some people won't care enough to pts at cheap prices. But I wonder if those in the middleground would be more likely to do the decent thing if it was dirt cheap.

yes but a basic insurance covers euthanasia...

Because they haven't got transport to take them to the market or the abattoir? Because they can't be bothered?

There IS a market for horsemeat Moomin, ring your nearest horse abattoir and ask them their price per kilo and they will tell you.

We aren't "overflowing" with unwanted horses. We may be overflowing with horses that people think are worth more than their meat value, but that's different altogether.

Are you serious?!! Not overflowing with unwanted horses?!

Have you not read that report at all?

Don't get me wrong cptrayes - I have no issues with humane slaughter for meat, but at the end of the day, people don't do it - they're not interested in it.

The horses in that report can be shot and eaten by pets or man. There is NO welfare issue if this fact is accepted. A problem only exists if soft-hearted people think that we should try and keep them all alive even though there is no sensible purpose in doing so.

And many of them are being shot!! That's exactly what has been said throughout this thread!

What the report is on about is how the amount of horses dumped, neglected, abandoned etc etc is increasing dramatically, and how it needs to be tackled.

It shouldn't be down to a bloomin welfare organisation to start up a meat market!!

What planet do you live on Moomin? The meat market is alive and well and always has been. Surplus horses found on verges should be shot if they cannot be rehomed as riding horses. No welfare issue I can see.

I really give up! That's the bloody point - they are being!! But there are hundreds and hundreds of horses that can be ridden and rehomed succesfully, or are subject to proceedings and cannot at that stage be disposed of for whatever reason. The point is that all of this expense is falling on the charities, and with dwindling donations to ALL of the charities (before anyone harps on about the RSPCA) then resources are becoming scarce.

I have never said the meat market is not alive and well -not sure where you are getting that from, what I am saying is that irresponsible horse owners in this country very rarely go down that route, or even just pts route. Instead, the horses get neglected, or dumped, or both.
