Leg cut

last night Judy cut herself on barb wire (not rusted) the cuts aren’t deep was wondering if I can home treat it or if I vet is needed (she’s 20 no past injury’s)
She lifts her feet fine doesn’t seem to be in pain and it’s not bleeding anymore. Ears perked eating her haylage fine this morning

Clip it, wash it with dilute hibiscrub and dry then apply a suitable antibacterial cream/lotion/potion. Keep it dry and check for heat building up, horses temp increasing and swelling/lameness. Keep an eye out for cellulitis.

Will do can I use coconut oil as a cream? Does she need to be stabled or can she stay in the field?

Always be extra careful with cuts on joints. I would talk to the vet because some antibiotics might be needed as it looks as though there is full skin thickness penetration.

Apologies katie&judy...I was thinking more of sudacreme or silver spray or an aloe Vera/manuka honey gel...vet could sell you flamazine cream.

I will get some of that tomorrow! I’ve cleaned it and washed it with hibiscrub she is stabled now was just wondering do I wash it daily? Should I take her on lead walks or reduce her movement?

I would be inclined to have a vet look at that, it looks quite nasty. Cuts over joints are a hot bed for infections and then it becomes deadly serious very quickly.

Looking at that photo I’d want a much better look at the site..it needs clipping and probably a vet visit..there is raggy flesh which could trap infection under scabs. Hope horsey is up to date with tetanus injections. As for washing every day...ideally we d want wound to be dry but if it’s weeping and yellow pus areas develop they need softening and cleaning away..the area dried again and cream/spray protected. Unless bandaged and protected from mud I wouldn’t be turning out until the area was healing over well.

I would get a vet out for that there is a great risk of that getting infected.

Another one for the vet. Mine, some years ago, was kicked on the joint - very small cut. He went lame after a couple of days and I got the vet out, who surprised me by making me take the horse straight to the vets. He was kept there for a few nights and was fine afterward. Injuries near a joint are a big worry.

As it is through the skin I would get a vet out just for preventative/precautionary reasons. My boy sliced his hock open once on electric wire (a lot deeper than that though) and ended up in horspital for 5 days having the joint flushed.

Thank you guys my cousin is in her third year for a vet course so I’m getting her to look at it too keeping it clean and dry seems to be shallow cuts but will call the vet out tomorrow if it’s gotten any worse

Seriously... don't be slack about this. I would have rung the vet within minutes of finding that (and probably emailed photos straightaway too) due to its position and the potential for needing antibiotics.
