I have a gypsy cob (profile pic) and all I would say is be very VERY careful of what particular "oil" you put on their feathers, if at all. And certainly never ever do it in the summer months.
I had a very bad experience of pig oil & sulphur; I had no idea it was such horrible caustic stuff and it made my poor mare's legs very sore, and what is truly horrendous is the number of places where you see people recommending this.
