Had an AWESOME day hunting last saturday, lots of jumping and hedges, but when i got back to the box and began to un-tack my horse i realised that his over reach boots, (which he always wears as he tends to get through shoes rather fast!!) had rubbed his leg raw. They have never done this before but i think the pressure of the mud against them must have caused them to turn up and dig away at his pasterns. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?? I feel so bad for making him go all day with such sores, and dont think i shall boot him up at all anymore and just hope he doesnt do anymore damage than what he has already done.....

Yes we have the same problem, one horse who always overreaches - well forges really, and wears overreach boots in general. We have tried him once with them on out hunting, they didnt show any signs of rubbing but he was really fed up after a couple of hours, kept stamping etc. We now dont put anything on him, or any of the others, and touch wood they have been ok so far.

I suppose it depends how wet it is and how long you go out for really...

Definitely a tricky one!!!! love your quote form the Tractor Boy Racer hahahaha :D

I never boot mine for anything, even XC (as they don't really like boots, I spent soooo much on fancy boots which he dislikes, so gutted, I love dressing him up haha), I guess it teaches my dangly legged TB to be a bit more careful too. The other day out hunting, we stopped for a second and someone noticed their boot had fallen down, got off, struggled to undo it because of the mud and then everyone set off and she had to test out her gymkhana skills haha!

Mine wears overreach boots for hunting, we originally had the plastic ones with Velcro at the front that did exactly that, So i bought some mark todd ones. they stay in the right place and do not flip over, he has not had any problem with these and he rubs really easily.

We do not bother booting ours up for hunting. Too much hassle. I was out on Wednesday and there was a chap out with us who must have got down 4 times to re adjust his boots. Total pain in the ass!

Ron always used to over reach and pull shoes off. I gave up with OR boots as our mud just sucks them off.... Our farrier started to shoe him with a lighter weight shoe with 2 toe clips ont he front, which adjusted the breakover point and he hasn't over reached since!

not much help I know, but just another way of thinking about it.

Try using the synthetic overreaches like the Prochoise ones that fit closely to the foot. Either that or you can get "shoe tape" which will act like an overreach boot without the risk of rubbing. I have never needed to use overreaches out hunting, but do use front tendon boots :)

Thanks for the help, think I will try him without and see how it goes. Hope you are right and will teach a gangly TB to be more careful!!! :P If not think I will invest in some of the boots mentioned! x

My pony wears Mark Todd over reach boots and they've never rubbed her out hunting. They don't turn and inside of the boot its really soft neoprene
