Leg Straps on rug rubbing horse - any ideas?

Hi - I have an anti rub vest for Dex (bossy bib) which is great and has helped with the shoulder rubbing but I have to use leg straps on my rugs if I use the bib as it is v slippery and I found him naked with rug (still done up and undamaged) on floor when I put fillet string on.

Tried last night with one leg strap on side that isnt rubbing and a fillet string but rug slips - what I really need is some really soft leg straps or an idea of what I can make some out of !!

Suggestions please !

The ordinary polypropylene webbing can be a bit harsh to sensitive horses, especially if it gets cold as it goes hard or if it gets muddy. There is a cushion web you can use, it's a bit thick but you can use it for leg straps, it has like a gel material inside as well as a softer outer.
Failing that, I would use a sleeve over it made out of acrylic sheepskin, like a narrower version of a girth sleeve.
Ask your local Saddler to help you, they may have the cushion web or air web in stock that they can use, it's worth a try.

ps. horse is actually a bulldozer in disguise and a thug - trust it to be a delicate flower underneath all that bravado !
 
I don't like leg straps on rugs, but it sounds like the rug doesn't actually fit properly hence the rubbing? Have you tried a different make/size
 
rug fits fine, he is very prone to rubs and I do have the leg straps fairly short (but with plenty of room for movement) rather than hanging on the ground as I worry about him getting leg caught, maybe the answer is just to lengthen them - will try that next year but as he already has a little rub want to avoid putting them on there unless nice and soft.

Interesting idea about the inner tube but in cold etc would worry it would rub too.

Interestingly his leg straps have only started rubbing since using the bossy bib - although i put the top strap through the loop I think it is soo slippery the rug is moving more than normal and the leg straps are doing their job stopping it slipping but hence the rubbing.

I have some lurking in my workshop somewhere, measure out how much you need, you can use the fittings off the original strap.I will bung in some hand waxed thread and a couple of needles in for you too.You'll need a good thimble to push the needle through the webbing!
PM me where you want it sent and I will shove some in the post tomorrow for you,I only have black I'm afraid as I don't have any other colours of that in stock .
How is your leg strap attached to the rug, is it looped on through itself or is it stitched on?

Hi Paris1 - as it is finally a bit warmer today I have switched rugs and he did have one day recently with no rug ! yipee but clip hasnt fully grown out and he is grey and ridden ! so rugs a must most of the time. have swapped to different lighter rug from now on so that may help.
 
ooohh Oz you star !! will prob cheat and avoid sewing (i am useless) as my rugs have loop one end I can permanently tie it to and I will tie other end to a small karabiner (climbing clip - cheap as chips at proper job).

Ok will do, but let me know how much webbing you want ?
We can sort the postage out after I have posted it.I will machine sew a loop on one end for you to save you having to do it, then you can loop it through itself so it will be secure, rather than tying it as they can slip undone and I will seal the webbing at the other end so it doesn't fray.

I buy the cheap rubbish ones - they are £1 for 2 I think ! not the best but do the job - they also do really large ones which I use for holding gates back (clip attached to fence by twine - when swing gate open clip goes round gate !) My keys are also attached to my handbag with one haha

You really are a star doing the sewing bit for me as well - will measure leg strap tonight and pm you along with name/address etc.
 
a mare at home does this, we tried fluffy noseband covers on the leg straps works a treat an they just velco on and off. you can get them on ebay mega cheap :D xx

hope so !!! each strap goes from in front of leg, inside leg to same side clip at rear of rug - when doing second strap up it is looped through the first one - my description is shocking but basically )( but with them looped in middle.

As I say he was fine till started using bossy bib - while I was away the girls next door looked after my 2 and did a brilliant job but didnt realise (I left page of instructions but forgot this) that you need to loop the rug strap through the loop on the bib so I wonder if the rug slipped more than normal and therefore leg straps came into play more than normal !

Oz has very very kindly come to my rescue and is sending me out some nice kind straps that hopefully wont rub - my original straps are very tough and as someone pointed out could have frozen in this weather we have had and then rubbed (they are turned out 24/7)

^5 this I dont like leg straps either i prefer filliet strings and change mine to this most times.

But i understand some rugs wont stay put with filliet strings.


OP I would


A. find a better rug that fits your horse and uses a fillet string.
B, buy some fur fabric asnd make a thin sleeve to go over the leg strap like a mini girth sleeve.
C buy some soft webbing and make your own

On my H-zone rug I have elasticated leg straps, maybe you could source some from somewhere

Otherwise, wrap duck tape around the strap where it is rubbing, I use this on my horses muzzle to stop rubs
 
Thanks for the ideas everyone - Oz has come up trumps and is sorting me out with some much kinder straps.

Just to clarify - his rugs DO fit and this has only been happening since I put the anti rub vest on -I do keep the straps fairly short for safety reasons which has never been a problem before and on most rugs I change straps to fillet strings but as said before with slippery anti rub vest he does a houdini and takes rug off if no leg straps!

You're most welcome, I've put 2 sorts of softer webbing in the parcel for you, let me know how you get on, Oz :)
 
We use bicycle inner tubes. Cut them the length of the leg strap and feed over the strap. Also make sure that your leg straps aare lose enough that they can hang reasonabley free from the leg.

Do up one and then feed the other through the loop before clipping onto the rug - this keeps the straps away from the legs and helps prevent the rug from coming off.
