hi there i am new to this so please bare with me:)

i have recently got a new horse and two weeks in she has come in from the field with a swelling on the outside of her hind leg just above her fetlock, the swelling goes about half way up her leg. there are no cuts or grazes and the swelling hasn't spread round to the the back or inside of the leg.

Does anyone have any ideas about what this could be? I had the vet out the day it happened but they were uncertain as to what it is they advised to cold hose twice a day stable bandage in between and put my mare on 2 bute a day. They want to assess again in 7 days. Any advice would be great!

hi snap .weve had our new horse 10 weeks and the day after getting vet out for something different she developed swelling and heat in the fetlock area.i am doing the same cold hosing and bandaging for support although shes out rather than in as she gets more agitated in.i am assuming she has tweaked it in the field and the ground is rock hard. shes still sound but will be rested until all heat and swelling gone.shes my daughters horse and she is so disappointed as had rallies planned. is your horse sound at the mo

hey oh i'm sorry to hear you have the same thing, especially as its rally season. My mare is not lame and seems alright in herself I've been told to keep her in till it either goes down or ultra sounded. its really strange as you can really squeeze the swelling and she does not react, i hope its not a ligament as that would just be a nightmare

thanks for your post Ax

Bet shes twisted and strained it a bit belting around the field. Try a Stephens Gel-Eze under bandage, you can put them in the freezer and they get really cold, re-usable so great value, cheapest on ebay. Have you asked your vet about an allegic reaction to an insect bite, thats another possibility?
I always put cool gel with arnica (for bruising) on these sorts of swellings, but only if tere is no open wound.
Hope that helps, good luck
